2022 Recruiting Thread
According to the Tipton Edits twitter feed, it is not looking good for UD in regards to 2022 prospect Paul McMillan:
https://www.tiptonedits.com/post/rec...-paul-mcmillan
Also, according to Tipton Edits Dayton native Shawn Phillips will be making some manner of announcement soon.

No clue quite frankly. He may just be releasing a list of finalists, but again I know nothing.

False alarm. Turns out the "announcement" was one of Shawn's Ypsi Prep teammates committing to Baylor:

Odd that his tweet has since been deleted, but it showed Dayton, Florida, Indiana, NC State, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Ohio State (probably the favorite).

We’ll see him up close Monday night at Flyin to the Hoop against DaRon and #1 ranked Compass Prep. Should be interesting.

Well, in my opinion, you can cross out Cincinnati. Players are vacating that program in droves. Indiana will be a big question mark given Archie's firing.

in the tweet, he listed and talked about
Ohio State, UD and NC State separately...
the others, he kind of grouped and lumped
together, not unlike macaroni and cheese that
cools down in lumpy globs...(my words, peeps)..
so, if I take from this we are in the unspoken
top 3.... would that be fair?

I see Emoni Bates (6’8”) from Ypsilanti Michigan has de-committed from Michigan State. Anthony Grant, go get him on the rebound.

After seeing his act in Vandalia against DaRon’s Compass team, I would take a hard pass. The kid is a total primadonna, painfully skinny, and way overhyped. His Ypsilanti team was getting drilled by 40 and he appeared to fake an injury to avoid playing in the second half. I know that TA111 was at the game and will probably agree with my assessment.

Pass on both Bates and Phillips. Bates’ attitude was very poor. When things didn’t go his way he sulked. As to Phillips, he is very slow and has horrible form on his shot.

Dayton makes Shawn Phillip's most recent list as he has trimmed it to seven schools.

I'll take the enigmatic 70s folk rock singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips and his 4-octave vocal range, over that Thompson Twins 80s synth-pop nonsense every single time. My sentiments with regards to the basketball prospects who share their names are quite similar.

That's not exactly how I read that. It says he HAD cut his list to 7 schools but recently has been hearing from Baylor, Villanova, and Kansas, which were not in the 7.

Shawn Phillips does not strike me as a future Dayton Flyer.
I've got no inside information, but this just doesn't feel like the recruitment of a guy that stays home. You don't leave your high school to play on some boy wonder's all star team for fun. You do it for exposure and notoriety. He's got some big time offers and is hearing from even bigger brand name schools. He doesn't seem to shy away from the spotlight and participates in recruiting interviews and updates.
Which is all well and good. I like Shawn Phillips, and I hope Phillips has an incredible college career and makes millions as a pro. But I'm getting a lot more of an Adreian Payne vibe than a Chris Wright vibe. Just idle speculation for a summer afternoon.

Re:Phillips. The days of waiting on some great savior to lift the program to national prominence are over. There are many very capable players on the current roster and I have the utmost confidence this coaching staff will restock as appropriate. If he wants to be a Flyer, welcome to the family. If not, good luck. This program will be good either way.

Based on what I saw from Phillips against AZ Compass, he is a project. He’s a BIG kid, but not muscular, slow, and has horrible (side spin) shooting form. If he commits to Dayton, fine. If he goes elsewhere, I won’t be overly disappointed.

I also would be shocked if he became a Flyer. He just doesn’t fit the type of player we are recruiting. He can’t stretch the floor and really doesn’t get up and down the floor well. He’d fit a slow paced type team that doesn’t really look to push the ball.

Very interesting. Lafayette is in the far northwest corner of Georgia about 30 miles south of Chattanooga. That's not an area we've recruited a lot in recent memory but Charles Little also hailed from that area, growing up about 30 miles northeast of Chattanooga in Cleveland, TN.
I haven't watched the video posted here, but interesting to note that Hadaway's likely being labeled as a forward due to his size (6-6, 195 lbs), but he seems to think of himself as a guard as he's identified himself as such on his twitter bio.

He handles the ball good! I could see him playing guard or forward. Don't know if he would fit into AG's style of play but that would be up to Anthony to decide. We are loaded with guards and forwards presently but a 6'6" guard would always be an asset!

We made Tre Holloman's final 6 with Marquette, U of I, Michigan St., Ok. St., and Minnesota.

Kid is a dual-sport athlete - one of the top cornerback prospects in the country as well as one of the best PG prospects. Oklahoma State, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Illinois are all apparently recruiting him to play both basketball and football. But he's obviously considering choosing basketball only as evidenced by his inclusion of Marquette and Dayton in his top six.

Dayton would be perfect. He could play basketball and football, but the football would not be a high pressure situation. And Adam Trautman showed you can get drafted from UD.

If he wants to play both in college, he's not going to play both at UD. Would that even be allowable? Seems like some non scholarship football teams would/could have some complaints if UD had kids on basketball scholarships that were playing football.

Why would it not be allowed? I'm sure many football players in the Pioneer League have scholarships from other sources.

I just came to the realization that this is all academic as we don't have any open scholarships next year.

I don't know if its allowed or not, but there is a reason UD was forced out of D3 football because of the "Dayton" rule. With that said, imagine your morehead St, Marist or Stetson, and each of Dayton, Butler, and Davidson decided they were going to use their last 2 basketball scholarships each year to house a QB who would otherwise be getting a scholarship to a MAC level school (or in this case a CB who has football offers from B10 and B12 teams)? seems a little unfair on the surface.
Its an interesting idea non the less, just doubt CAG would be too keen on having someone on scholarship, a top 60 recruit no less, spending July-October playing and practicing football and risking injury rather than training for basketball. One thing if that kid was going to be a walkon in basketball. I doubt its all that appealing from the kids perspective either.
Odds are, there is a scholarship opening next year in basketball. Someone(s) will likely transfer out just about every season from just about every team in D1.

If I understand NCAA rules right, we do have one scholarship available to use for 22-23, even if nobody leaves. The upcoming 21-22 year will be Weaver's fourth. If he comes back and uses his fifth year in 22-23, it would be under the NCAA's "2020-21 didn't count" rule, in which case Weaver wouldn't count against our 13-scholarship limit (we could carry 14).
I don't know if we WOULD do that, but I think we could.
And of course, much more likely, given today's reality, is that one or more of our current 13 leaves the program before 22-23.

I thought the not counting rule only appled to last year's seniors.

Pretty sure Lifelong is correct. Weaver's scholarship next year would count against our total number of 13.

Yes but he's referring to the scholarship not counting. For example if one of the seniors had stayed for another year we'd be over our scholarship limit but the exception would apply and allow us to have 14.

This can't possibly be the case. The point of the scholarship not counting for this year was so that seniors who played during this one messed up Covid season (20-21) would be allowed to return for an extra year without it hurting the team's overall scholarship numbers.
A player who is not a senior (for example we'll use Brea) does get an extra year because 20-21 "didn't count," but since they still have eligibility left the scholarship exception does not apply to them. It only applied to players who no longer had eligibility.

Not that I have seen this written anywhere but it would be logical that the NCAA let everybody slide for a year because they didn't have time to react and didn't want them to take away scholarships from existing or new kids to make up for people staying. But after a year, all schools should be able to adjust how many scholarship they are offering and be able to stay with the 13.

The 13 scholarship rule is only waived for the 21-22 season, and only applies to players that played as seniors last year and are returning in 21-22 (i.e. Crutcher, Tshimanga, Watson, Chatman had any of them returned.)
The limit is 13 this year (21-22) but they could have had as many as 17 if those four guys had come back. The limit is 13 next year (22-23) regardless of who makes up the thirteen.

Correct, so teams must now “figure out” going forward who might take advantage of the extra year since we will be back to 13 total scholarships.

I'm sure some scholarships will open up, but seeing as we don't have any at the moment I would assume the staff is being extremely selective for 2022.

Sometimes program gamble that a big man will develop as a late bloomer. NC picked up Sterling Manley a few years ago.

We have a new offer, kid is a raw but I love him
Enkhiin-Od Michael Sharavjamts
@OdEnkhiin
Blessed and thankful to say I have an received offer from University of Dayton!
The 6'8" Forward is from Mongolia, played at Prolific Prep in CA most recently, but will play this year his senior year at ISA in Willoughby, Ohio.
Reminder, we have 0 schollies to give for 2022, so they must love him.

Mongolian Mike played on Gabe Cupps AAU team this past summer. He was going to play at Centerville for the upcoming season, but his dad inexplicably made him transfer to ISA. Mike wanted to play for the reigning state champs, but apparently didn’t have any say in the decision.
Dayton was also interested in Centerville’s 6’5 shooting guard Tom House, but didn’t have enough 2022 scholarships available. Tom committed to Florida State today over Georgia. The kid was the leading scorer last year for the Elks and can flat-out light it up from 3 point range.

So Flyers sign Mongolian Mike in 2022, Cupps becomes a Flyer in 2023, and House transfers back home in 2023.
It would be great to keep the local talent at home, but this will be the only time in my life I have rooted for any Elks

Wonder if Sharavjamts is a take. It's signing season, so he could sign anytime until Nov. 17.
Don't anticipate him signing with Dayton right now, given there are no guarantees any scholarships will be available (though there certainly will be), but I would love to bring him on board. Seems really long and skilled. I get Mikesell vibes.
He's had a nomadic high school career, which I suppose is to be somewhat expected. He played at Prime Prep in California last year. He's been affiliated with both Centerville High School and the Cleveland-area Andrews Osborne Academy, which Dayton seems to keep a close eye on.

I can tell you that due to academic concerns due to language issues, there is a possibility that he would not play right away. Also, due to his nomadic basketball travels, there was a period where he wasn’t taking classes and attending an actual school which caused him to fall behind.

I want to yes they have, but I can't recall when that occurred. I feel like it was shortly after a coaching change and everyone knew there were going to be kids transferring out at seasons end.
At any rate, with this team, I think that would be poor form. Yes, the odds are significantly in the favor that someone (likely multiple someones) will be transferring out seasons end. Lack of playing time, looking for something different, home sick, gets in trouble, etc..... who knows, but there will likely be a couple of spots open. However, in the age of the transfer portal, there will be multiple options available to CAG in the spring as well. So why put undue pressure on a bunch of guys sitting on the end of the bench that know "one of us has to go" so they start "looking for theirs" vs being a solid team player hoping to work towards their own shot down the line.

Ed Cooley?!
Going head-to-head with Providence and Ed Cooley for Mike's services brings back memories.
Ed is probably wringing his hands right now, while thinking ," ****, I'll never get this kid because Dayton plays 30 home games".

I hope we hear good news but it begs the question: Has UD ever gained a verbal commitment from a player when there is no scholarship available for said player?
I don’t recall that ever happening before. Not saying it’s bad in the new transfer environment…just the new reality.

EWU was the first school to offer him back in 2019 I believe.

Watched Centerville dismantle Miamisburg tonight, that team is unreal. Gabe Cupps in the real deal. Tom House had an off night shooting until the mid 3rd quarter when he scored 11 points in about 3 minutes. But the reason I posted in this thread was I have no idea how Rich Rolf doesn't have a ton of offers for D1. He's 6'7", can shoot the 3, gets vertical, very active defender. He's a slightly bigger and more athletic Ryan Mikesell. Whether we have an open scholarship to offer or not, we should offer, he'd be a perfect fit on a CAG team.

I agree with you. I saw CVille play Wayne over the holidays and he looked really good. More athletic than I thought he would be. I would think his stock is rising. I read in DDN that he is a gym rat too. If there is enough clay there (I think there is), his work ethic combined with good coaching could yield a solid A10 level player.

Hopefully, Rich opened a lot of eyes at Flyin’ to the Hoop. He looked like the best player on the floor which included 4 and 5 star players. He’s a great kid, extremely hard worker, and would be a great addition to our Dayton team.

According to a Jablonski tweet, Coach Grant made it back in time to watch the Centerville/Fairmont game. The obvious target is 6’7 Forward, Rich Rolf. Centerville won 51-31 and extended their winning streak to 35 games. Rolf led the Elks with 14 points.

I'm glad we're at least doing due diligence on Rolf. After seeing him play live i'm all on board. He's out performed House this year, and House is on his way to Florida State.

I was told Centerville beat Huntington Prep (WV) yesterday pretty handily and that Rolf scored 28 points. I hope AG is taking a serious look at him! The Elks have gone undefeated this year and they definitely played a tougher than normal GWOC schedule. I like winners…sign him up!
