Jaelynn Penn Decommits

Jaelynn has decommitted after our coaching change. She is ranked 39th in the nation by ESPN. Tough possible loss but says she is still considering UD along with Indiana and South Carolina. I can almost guarantee all UD commits started getting calls from other schools as soon as Jabir had to resign.

It's purely and simply a product of changing leadership. There is no hire UD could have made that would preclude this from happening. The worst fear for a recruit is the uncertainty implied by the change. It happens in every sport and gender.

Shauna now has a scholarship to work with to bring in her preferred talent. We will be ok.

If she goes to Indiana can we ask for Amber to come back? Only half joking.

There are a lot of uncommitted players on the ESPNW top 100 for 2017 that would look good in a Dayton uni (including Penn!).

Shauna played a key role in landing many of the current and recently graduated players. Almost no coaching hire could stop committed recruits from reopening, but she also has a chance to re-recruit those who do.

I assume we will continue previous conversations and possibly still land her. Shauna had to be part of the recruitment process initially. Just needs to spend more time with her.

I think that Shauna's style of basketball will be similar to coach Jabir's, they are going to play at breakneck speed, the style necessary to prepare for a possible pro career and ncaa victories.

I also think that Shauna's enthusiasm for the program will come through loud and strong with recruits.

Hopefully she will still come to UD but I think that Shauna and her team are good recruiters and some of this had to be expected

Shauna don't have to recruit her as she was part of the process that got her here in the first place....all Shauna has to do is show she can win like Jabir did and she'll re commit.

Smart move on her part. Take a wait and see attitude if Shauna can deliver.

Penn is a huge loss. Probably the top recruit other than Malott. Sad news. Let's hope Shauna gets this ship turned around, and players are once again wanting to come to Dayton.

Not a loss yet, no verbal is set in stone, she is still considering Dayton. Shauna can re recruit her all she wants but it will be Shauna's wins that will seal the deal. Talk is cheap, Penn wants to see results, and who can blame her, she wants to go with a winner. Have all the confidence in the world Shauna will deliver.

Samantha Breen, who has moved up in the rankings (#67 nationally) over the summer, seems to be staying on board. She has tweeted pics of Shauna and Neil, and herself with Simon and Kayla this week.

With regard to Penn and any other recruit in our pipeline we have a unique situation in that Jabir didnt take a new job. He is still available to talk to these recruits on behave of UD. And he worked with Shauna and most probably recommended her for the job. Those are two unique positions that can help Shauna and UD if she reaches out to Jabir. Hopefully Penn will re-commit to UD.

Would not JJ need to be on staff in some capacity to initiate a contact with a recruit? I think a recruit could call him at any time. I qualify as a booster - as does just about anybody - and I stay away from recruits.

I would think that if he does not have a position on the staff he could not contact a recruit. I would guess that they could forward his number but I'm not sure about that. What would happen if Ohio State gave recruits Lebron James' number to fill them in on going to Ohio State.

Can't blame her

Indiana won 21 games in a much tougher league last year. Our team lost all discipline in route to a soul crushing losing season, mad particularly galling by losing badly including 6 of 8 down the stretch. (yes I know we had injuries--_Avid- we're not alone in that). Now our coach resigns unexpectedly with what appears to be a somewhat bare cupboard. Indiana makes off with our best player in Amber Dean. And another heralded recruit bails as well. Really can't blame her.

First time in 14 years IU made it to the NCAA, and they won one game.

Did you forget about Kelly Austria? As good on offense and awesome defense to close to zero for Dean.

You are probably correct. I simply didn't think about this. I'm sure JJ called all the recruits about his decision and spoke highly of UD and staying.

My philosophy on recruiting decisions is to NEVER criticize the choice of the athlete or to bad mouth the institution where the athlete is attending. It's their choice and it should be respected so let's move on and simply focus on the season coming up please.

Right now Shauna doesn't have an individual track record, just an assistant to an elite 8 run, which ain't too shabby. As she racks up her wins recruits and others will take notice.

She knows UCONN somewhat and an upset at Storrs would do wonders for her and the program. The program projectory is still upward till proven otherwise.

Makes you wonder if her knee is now okay, and she is getting bigger offers. Would love to see her at UD.

When did they change coaches, thought they had a high recruiting class coming in.

I'm sure Shauna Green and company will be in contact with her.

Doubt Shauna even bothers reaching out. That ship sailed.

Why would you even think that. Were not talking Sam Breen who decommitted after a successful flyer season.

Oglesby decommitted right after Jabir resigned. She new little to nothing about Shauna as a HC. Now the scenery has changed, Shauna and UD finished strong and she already knows the school, campus and most of the players.

Other possibility would be Indiana, they seem to be getting a lot of UD left overs.

Full disclosure, I haven't been as sold on her like others have been.

I've long suspected that Shauna wouldn't guarantee the scholarship and wanted to see how the rehab went first because she went from being excited to meet her to decommitting after they met. But whatever the case, she decommitted and was sold on ODU merely a month later. Both parties had moved on. Shauna has other targets now that are just as good or better, while Oglesby can go to UNCW or FAU and play for a coach she had committed to.

Jaelynn Penn was a stud as the KY all-stars beat IN. She had 20 pts and 10 rebounds and was MVP. Losing her hurts.

Sadly, bad times for them. Hopefully they will overcome the issues and be stronger than ever. This hardship goes way beyond basketball for the family.

Wow, black mold sucks more than a fire. My heart goes out to this family already under stress.

Penn followed it up with a 20 and 9 performance in the game two win.
