Spring 2020

Team is back in the gym working. Schedule should be released sometime in February. For the first time, in a very long time, the Flyers will have more Grad-Srs-Jrs on the roster than Sophs-Frs. Apparently over Christmas we got a lot more experienced and older. LOL.

It “appears” Grad Transfer Rachael Fara will be working with the team this spring. I do not know if she is available to play next year. There was some talk when she transferred in that she might be given a second year of elgibility at UD. I’m sure UD applied for the consideration from the NCAA, but I do not know if it was granted. They might not have an answer yet. She was honored during Senior Day in the fall. We have two freshmen MBs coming in this fall’s, so she might only be assisting the team this spring because we are a little short at MB and Right OH. In the past, some Seniors have practiced with the team in Spring to help.

Here’s a look at the spring season roster (in black) with incoming freshman listed in red. Some players are listed under two positions.

Setters - SR Bridget Doherty (250 Recruit), JR Josie Vondran, SO Livie Sandt (250) (Sandt’s status will probably change to Redshirt FR in the fall)

Middles - GR Rachael Fara (250), JR Molly Asmus (250), Redshirt SO Amelia Moore (250), FR Laney Yates (#51), FR Lindsey Winner (250)

Left OH - Redshirt Jr Jamie Peterson (#73 + AA), JR Allie Papesh (#66), Redshirt SO Mik VanLanen (250), SO Grace Dynda

Right OH - GR Rachael Fara (250), GR Mahalia Swink, maybe JR Molly Asmus (250) and maybe SO Grace Dynda

L/DS - JR Maura Collins (250), JR Liz House, JR Carissa Beyers, FR Lexie Almodovar (110), FR Anna Wuensch

By the numbers:

1 returning AA - I’m not sure we’ve ever had 2 returning?
4 Top 110 recruits - #51, #66, #73, #110 - most ever. Two are freshmen who will battle for spots in the rotation.
7-8 Top 250 recruits (pending Fara’s status)
11-12 Total ranked recruits - most ever.

Biggest factor in my opinion is...experience.

9-10 GR-SR-JRs + 2 Redshirt SO = 11-12 players (out of the 17-18 on the roster) that will have 3 years of DI experience when the season starts this fall. We haven’t had that kind of experience in a long time...2010 to be exacted when 9 of the 14 players had 3+ years experience. The 2010 team was two points away from a Sweet 16 appearance and finished the season ranked #16. 2010 team was the best ever at UD. This year’s team will have more ranked players and more experience.

I’ve seen nothing yet on the spring schedule But there are roster changes.

Looks like Carissa Beyers has retired from vball. She appears to still be enrolled at UD as she went bowling with the team. This is a numbers move. She played behind Maura, Liz and Jordan last year. We have two very talented backrow players coming in each of the next two years. Plus the grad transfer Swink is suppose to be a good 6-rotation option. Basically only Jamie went 6 last year, but if Swink goes six, that eliminates a need for the replacement for Jordan in next year’s rotation. Carissa helped us win some matches the last two years, especially as a serving specialist. Wish her the best in finishing her degree.

Also, and this was a surprise, after Brooke transferred to Indiana, it looks like Josie Vondran has left the team. That leaves Sr Bridget Dorhery, who has basically only played the 3 backrow setter rotations because she is 5’10” and redshirt freshman Livie Sandt who is also 5’10” as our setters. Being 5’10” at Setter in the front row is ok if you can jump and block. Neither of these two were recruited to do that, but rather play the back 3 in a 2-Setter offense.

We might be on the market for another setter. Just got the rockstar message out on twitter. I’m working finding out who it is...Transfer or future recruit. Might take a day or two. More to come.

Well, found out they had a recruit on campus this past weekend. GameDay in Frericks had to be impressive for that visit. High probability this recruit signed/committed, but I don’t know if it was a transfer, addition for this fall or a future class. NCAAs changed recruiting rule last year, so if I remember correctly, it could only be a 2020 or 2021 class. Can’t talk to 2022 class until the fall of their junior year now. We have a 2022 commitment that was grandfathered in, but won’t be able to add to that class until fall of 2020. Working on more details...like who and when.

I’ve got nothing new so far except speculation based on some fringe facts.

1. We have 11 on the spring roster. One is the grad transfer Swink. It’s good she could enroll in Jan and get work in with the team.
2. We have a freshman class of four coming in the fall. #51 recruit 6-5 MB Yates who should make an immediate impact either paired up with Amelia at MB or playing at the right pin for a year to block. Swink is expected to fill whatever spot Yates doesn’t fill. Swink could also go 6 rotations to compliment JPete’s 6-rotations with both attacking out of the backrow. Usually at the college level you don’t have an MB play 6-rotations. So that leans towards Swink on the right pin if Horsmon uses her 6-rotations.
3. Allie should also be our left OH2. She could also go 6-rotations if she works at it this off-season, opening up the option to play Swink at MB and Yates on the right pin.
4. We have lots of hitter options, including Asmus, VanLanen and a freshman OH coming. We needed a hitter that can go 6-rotations like JPete. Swink was brought in with that in mind. At the time we still had 3 setters on the roster, so using Brooke’s scholly for a 6-rotation player versus another setter was the right move.
5. With Josie no longer with the team, a transfer setter might be in the mix now. Horsmon has always been pretty “ demanding” of his setters. He expects them to be in great shape so they can run down bad passes and get to the second touch and still deliver a good set to a hitter. Finding a freshman setter that has those skills at this late date isn’t impossible, but odds are low. A transfer seems more likely if that’s the new recruit.
6. We have 4 recruits for fall 2021...I don’t think there are any open scholarships for that class. There is a setter in that class plus Livie will be a redshirt freshman setter this fall. The 2021 setter is replacing Sr setter Bridget
7. Backrow players - we return JPete, Maura and Liz. Brought in Swink for her 6-rotation skills, and Allie is probably working on her backrow play this spring. Freshmen class has two backrow players coming in the fall. One just missed being a Top 100 Recruit (110) and the other was recommended by an alum. The grandfathered 2022 Recruit is a superstar Libero candidate. Our backrow was solid last year. It will be really good this year.

My guess is we found a transfer setter that can play front row to replace Josie - but it’s all speculation at this point. Nothing listed out on Rich Kern or volleytalk yet. I could be 100% wrong, so we will see. Right now I’ve got nothing but speculation and a confirmation there was a recruit on campus last weekend. That’s also “odd”. Last weekend was a big club vball weekend and all the college programs were out recruiting at club events in 3-4 cities. Future recruits were all playing club tournaments last weekend. The recruit on campus last weekend was probably not a high school player. More likely a transfer candidate??? Again, speculation on my part.

It’s amazing how there hasn’t been a name that’s surfaced on the new recruit. But, I did pick up some info from Associate Head Coach Alyssa’s twitter account.

On 3/14 (after the 3/9 Rockstar post), Coach posted a video of Rudy “Flyered Up” with the following:

“When your 2020 class gets a big time addition whose future is VERY bright...you forget the pandemic craziness happening and just celebrate.”

So whoever is coming, arrives this summer to start working with the team for the 2020 season. Still don’t know if it’s a transfer or a recruit out of high school. If it’s a high school player, based on this post, I’d say it’s someone who maybe changed their mind about an earlier commitment. “A big time addition” isn’t usually the words you use for a very-late in the recruiting cycle find in the unsigned players. It CAN happen and Horsmon has done it. Amber Erahon comes to mind. But no one was describing her that way before she ever played a match at this level.

Still leaning towards a transfer or maybe a ranked high school player who changed her mind late and decided Dayton was where she wants to be. Glad to hear it’s for 2020.

Ktyal Price

She must have been the "rock star" - and seems to be a lady of many talents!

Yeah - just picked it up. Her track stats are really solid. Long Jump almost 17’, 100H 15.65, 300H 52.95, HJ 5-4, TJ 34.5.

And, yes I had to look this up...she’s “ambidextrous”. That means she is both right and left handed. I had never heard of it before. What I do know is there are certain advantages in volleyball if you are left handed. So being both in my opinion would be even more advantageous. It will be interesting to see how that is developed at this level.

First impression is at 6’1” and playing MB, she might be developed into a shorter, quick MB like we had with Amber Erahon. But we have a stockpile of MBs right now. There will be 3 in the freshman class, plus we have the grad transfer Swink who came this semester, although if TH wants her to go 6-rotations, she will probably play RS. And another good MB coming in 2021.

Not uncommon for high school MBs to move to OH at the college level. If we ran her approach straight at the net, versus angled from off the court, she could swing with either hand to avoid the block. What a nightmare for a blocker. It’s going to be very interesting to she how this young lady is developed and used.

Also found a website (and a picture) showing Ktyal was a setter just a couple years ago. There would be huge advantages to have a setter that is both left and right handed. One article about her high school team said she was hitting from the RS OH spot. Also said the team used a 7th grader and then 8th grade setter her last two years in high school. I think it’s a small high school, so that is common to have junior high girls play up. Might be Ktyal was moved to hitter because of numbers. She also grew from 5’10” to 6’1”. In a small school, you will be a hitter at 6’1”.

I look forward to seeing this young lady develop in Dayton’s program. Lots of options.
