Well, this is disappointing and somewhat unexpected. I guess we better get used to this new form of “free agency” in college basketball. I’m not sure the new transfer rule will be a good thing for college basketball. Good luck, Dwayne

Admittedly I don't like to see players leave. But this really hurts. I loved his energy and toughness.

Did not expect this one, but he knows it will be an uphill battle with what is coming in.
So that frees up one scholly for another guard.

This one hurts. He had leadership skills — the kind we lacked this season. High character kid, good defender, charismatic, and a team cheerleader who put squad above self. I hope he excels wherever he lands.

Perspective
According to the WSJ (of all places) approximately 30% of all Div 1 players have entered the portal.
Many will decide to stay put, I presume.

Agree, just because he entered the portal does not mean that he is definitely leaving, he may be just exploring his options, players at other schools have entered the portal but ultimately chose to stay put where they are.

Hate to see Dwayne go. I really liked the kid. Thought he would really excel for us this year. I am sure he will do well where ever he goes.

Dwayne has had a year off to think this out. He could come back, but my guess is he has been committed for some time now. I wanted him to stay, but this isn't like the Meacham bail out. We have options. Mali and Greer plus AG's likely back up plans will ease the pain.

Much like Jordan Davis a few years ago, when top shelf recruits are going to take minutes away, the transfer portal gives a kid a way to find a better fit.
Really liked Dwayne and hope he has recovered from his ACL surgery.

I hope I am the first to eat crow in 11 months with what I am about to say, but Ibi is the last person I wanted to see return based on the body language, lack of effort at times on defense, lack of movement away from the ball, etc displayed in a few games last season. I assumed he was the problem, maybe the problem that led to this is already gone. Bottom line, we had a serious chemistry issue in multiple games in 20-21. A fresh start is needed in my opinion.
Back to the crow, you can Smoke it, BBQ it, Buffalo it, toss it on the flat top, etc....... More than willing to eat a very very large helping and hope I am WRONG. First time for everything, right?

After it appeared Grant and Dwayne had a difference of opinion early on that was ironed out, Grant grew fond of him and put a lot of trust in him on the court -- especially in late-game situations. From this standpoint I think Cohill was in a lot of ways an AG type of kid.
Sometimes you just need a change of scenery. Who wants to sit? Very few.

I wouldn't be quite as hard on Ibi as you were here, but I also was hoping for a "fresh start." I didn't want him being an obstacle to the freshmen getting PT/experience. But with Cohill leaving that wouldn't be as big of a problem. I assume that if AG welcomes him back his attitude (if it was a problem) will have been adjusted.

I think that Dwyane made the assumption that his PT was not going to be want he wanted/thought it should be. Who knows what CAG and he discussed. Last year's injury, I think, really set him back. Dwayne seemed to me to be a good kid and I wish him nothing but the best.

I'm thinking that with all the players we have who will expect(not necessarily get) minutes, CAG can't guarantee that Dwayne, nor many others, are going to be a key cog. He has two years of eligibility left and probably doesn't want to gamble one of those away that some of the newbys won't fit better in the offense/defense.
Basically nobody's guaranteed anything this coming season and Dwayne has more to lose by taking a chance he will win out in the competition for minutes.
I really liked him and saw a lot of potential and predict that he's going to be the most successful player to transfer out of Dayton since Staten. Nothing but best wishes for him.

I didn't want him back for a few reasons. I appreciated what he gave us, especially last year off the bench. But he's a terrible ball handler and with all the size we have, we can't afford to have one of the guard positions taken up by a bad ball handler.
I also am not crazy about guys that are just scorers, I want something else like rebounding, assists and/or defense to go along with it. If he comes off the bench like last year, I'd be okay with it but I don't think that's what will happen.

Very sorry to hear about Dwayne’s intent to transfer out. I really thought he was positioned to rise from the ashes like the Phoenix and be the vocal leader this team was missing last year. I hope he makes the most of his chance, wherever he lands. Thanks for your efforts, Dwayne. You’ll always be a Flyer.

If Europe is shut down from COVID again, players like Ibi will have very limited options. In that case, playing college ball is probably his best option.

Ibi back would be a great. We need a shooter. Otherwise we depend on the 4th best guard on the 7th best team in the league at one guard, the other a complete unknown (unless it’s Koby who is known and nowhere near a championship level player ).
Losing Cohill is of little consequence. His recovery is unknown. Even if fully recovered, we lose a kid who averaged one (1) fg per game; hardly irreplaceable.

Cohill was the 6th best rated UD recruit out of high school, I guess, from 1999-now per 247sports. The below list is suspect maybe, both Sibert and Derenbecker were top 4, transfers must not be included.

Agree.
I don't think anyone is guaranteed anything moving forward. Either you you have the stones to play and get it done or you don't.
Cohill can determine his playing time by going somewhere where he knows and is virtually guaranteed PT.
Ibi on the other hand. Guy may be able to ball when he wants to turn it on...but like Clayton...the body language and chemistry last season reminded me of the SS/CC issues. Was it him or someone else? Who knows. If he wants to come back as a leader...okay. He want's to vote present and not lead...let the new guys fill that role.

One thing that you could count on was that Dwayne was going to give you 100% effort on both offense and defense. Especially defense because this past season it was non existent at the guard position except when Chatman was healthy.
Good luck to him in his future endeavors!

Just occurred to me. As of now, we have a roster of players where nobody that has played 2 seasons with the Flyers. Meaning, nobody who played in the 2019-2020 season is on our roster to play 2021-2022. That has to be a first. 6 players will have played only one season with the Flyers(Sissoko, Weaver, Zimi, Brea, Amzil and RJ) while 6 others have played zero(Greer, Smith, Camara, Washington, Holmes and Amaefule).

I was thinking this exact thing earlier.
Our current 2021-22 roster has scored 565 combined points in UD uniforms.
That's fewer than Obi Toppin or Jordan Sibert scored by themselves in their final years at UD.

Not only that, but 98% of us ticket holders will go into next year having never seen a single player on the team play live at UD. I know in my 30+ years as a season ticket holder that has never happened.

From what I understand this expression is not based in fact. Crow is suitable table fare. Think larger mourning dove.
Not gonna lie, this one hurt. No secret he was one of my favorite players. If healthy I think he would’ve started and gotten all the minutes he wanted, provided his play was up to par. I’m trying to see the bright side of this but I’m struggling. If we land another guard like Rocket Watts that would help. I don’t see how this relates to Ibi possibly staying in any way. They play different positions. Ibi is a big, elite scoring wing. Cohill is a lock down defending ball handler and energy guy.

That may have never happened in the entire history of the program, at least not since the end of WWII, just before Blackburn took over. I mean, consider the numbers: 98% of season ticket holders; 0 players seen live in action, in a UD uniform, in Dayton, Ohio. The last time the program had roster turnover like this would have been right after WWII, over 75 years ago. And, even then, there had to have been at least 1 player on the 1945-46 team that played in 1944-45, right? Staggering!
Edit: that doesn’t include exhibition games, as Sissoko played in the exhibition to begin the 2019-20 season.

Losing the entire team therefore is of little consequence. We lose an entire team who averaged one (1) fg per game; hardly irreplaceable. (Sarcasm)

If he doesn't get picked up by another team (or at least one that he feels comfortable with) it doesn't mean there will be a spot for him at UD. We may well not have a scholarship available. The devil you know is better than the one you don't know. That said, Cleveland State is on the uptick - not sure if they need a guard - but he'd be close to home and most likely start.

What? Defense or lack of it aside. He is a Legit scorer and possible NBA shooter.
That's what. While I'm not a huge fan of his. He does have a chance. Score 18 or 19 a game next year. Hit 40% from 3. Dont be so crappy on defense. Just maybe

Good luck Dwayne. And thank you for your 3 years!

In a Q and A two part series with Jablonski, Grant spoke about Cohill's departure.
A: Dwayne was here for three years, and obviously, he got injured I think a week before we started practice (last fall). That and Dwayne just personally, his family, they went through a lot with COVID and some personal things. It was a really challenging year for Dwayne on several different fronts. He kind of had to grow through some things. I think at the end of the day, our conversation was, it was probably good for Dwayne to get a fresh start, and the opportunity for him to do that presented itself at Youngstown State. Dwayne was an integral part here for the three years. There’s just some things you go through as you mature through this process of being a college student-athlete. I always say we get them from 17 to 21 or 22, so there’s maturing that we all do and that we all have to go through when we’re in that phase. I think Dwayne’s growth here and what he learned here and what he experienced here hopefully will help him in this next opportunity.

I think this section says it all. I could be totally wrong, but the way I read that, Grant may have given him a nudge in that direction.

This just shows the class of Coach Grant. He wanted to give the young man a fresh opportunity in which he would be able to get some major minutes. Frankly, that was not going to happen this year as a Flyer. I would call this a bit of "tough love."

I wonder what the discussion was like with Luke Frazier - similar, but earlier in his UD career?
