From SI: "Kobe Elvis - Guard - DePaul. A recruit out of Canada, Elvis was a true freshman who could develop into something much bigger. He averaged just over four points a game, while shooting 42% from the floor. Already has offers from Clemson, Dayton, Cal, Colorado State, Boston College, Grand Canyon, Drake."
Shot the three well and free throws not so good.

Is this the last scholarship that was open?
I thought that we already had a covey of point guards in Weaver, Greer, Smith and maybe Brea? Is Grant recruiting over Smith?
The team does not have a center and I was looking for the recruitment of a transfer big kid.

You don’t need an old school traditional center these days... Shooting guard was the biggest need. Very thin there. The Elvis kid is a combo guard who can play PG in a pinch but I imagine he’ll play off the ball with Greer, Malachi, or Weaver most of the time. His biggest competition for minutes will probably be from the other Koby on this roster.

Look at the roster AG and staff have built. It's really kind of obvious:
One or two primary ball handlers (they have 5)
Three or four wings (they have 7*)
Will be on the court 99% of the time. No more traditional 12345 for the most part. I'm thrilled to watch it in action with 100% Grant recruits on the roster. It could become really great in the 2023 season after these guys get some experience.
Remember the Shaka VCU teams? It seemed like every single guy was 6'7" with a 7'2" wingspan, was fast as lightning and played suffocating defense. Kind of like that.
*and Big Mou makes 8. He's a bit of a square peg right now. I don't think he'll see a ton of PT this year while they coach him up. Maybe when the opponent has a monster big and we need somebody to wear him out for 15 minutes.

The roster was heavy on front court players. Another guard was needed.

Not the first Flyer from Brampton, Ontario. Former UD Volleyball player Amanda Cowdrey was from a Brampton. She was MVP of the A10 conference Tourney, so the bar has been set.

Put me down as one who is very high on Koby 1 at the 2 for next year.
Kid looked solid all last year with the ball in his hands, improved his D and RBing thru the year and found his shot and wasn’t shy to take the 3 in some pressure spots in the last 5-7 games.
I also think EW will look completely different next year. Had to be tough fitting in on a team with 3 guys at your position that were expected to carry the team. I expect him to be a leader and play more games like Memphis than most other games.
I also am stoked about MS and LG and their opportunity to come in without having to carry the entire load day1

The flyin' elvis... we do not have a large
enough sample size on free throws, he
was 4 for 8 for the season...
in his senior season in H.S. he shot 86%
for the year.. I put stock in that
3 ptrs, 13 for 31 for the season, 41.9%
He averaged over 26pts/game at
Bill Carothers SS..
1st team All Ontario...
I know they always show their
best plays, but it looks like he
can see the court and his team mates
quite well.. here is that from his
senior year... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_stZLbm2BFE

We have several bigs. What we don’t have is the big plodding center, which quite frankly we don’t need. It’s a different game now.

I’m past the point of trying to figure out who is going to get minutes this year. I’ll let the players and coaches sort that out.
I will say that given the choice between Lukas Frazier, Rodney Chatman, and Dwayne Cohill vs. Toumari Camara, Richard Amaefule, and Kobe Elvis I’ll take the new players over the outgoing players. Frazier and Cohill played less than 10 minutes combined (all season, not per game!) and Chatman (IMHO) never accepted the role he was best suited for within the program. I hope all three are successful at their new destinations. Camara will produce more than Chatman (frankly all three). Amaefule and Elvis have much more upside than Frazier and Cohill.
It will be an interesting fall. Minutes will be earned, not given.

Kobe has a super quick crossover dribble and he plays with a little bit of an attitude. I think the Flyers will actually have two point guards on the court next year, much like they did with Chatman and Crutcher. I like that approach, especially if you have depth at that position.

I guess that means we are not going after Connor McCaffery the transfer from Iowa. I was wondering why he couldn't get along with his own dad! He was a good three point shooter but its a moot point now.

Wasn’t McCaffery one of the ones who was talking trash about Obi vs Garza 2 years ago for NPOY? Advocating for your guy is one thing but talking crap about the other guy isn’t cool. That whole episode pretty much turned me into a fan of anyone playing the Hawkeyes.

I think you are thinking of CJ Fredrick who committed to Kentucky. It was well known he was going to UK when he entered the portal.
And yes, Connor was one of the players trashing Obi.

I watched the tape and our coaches know talent. This guy has speed and great footwork. Welcome Elvis!!
What a team we are going to have. "Wait til next season" has new meaning. But getting them all to gel as a team will be the challenge. At least covid-less they will have the whole summer to come together as one.

In the first half of the Western IL game, see Elvis at:
2:00 hits a 3
2:35 runs into a pick
6:00 nice pass to a cutter
6:10 either a rebound or a steal (a teammate did all the work, but not sure if it counted as a block or a stripped ball)
6:30 makes a 3
6:45 blocks out a bigger guy
7:00 strips the ball (though from my viewpoint kinda looked like an uncalled foul)

I know DePaul wasn't very good, but still seems pretty impressive to me that he played 20 minutes a game as a true freshman.
I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he starts beside Weaver in the backcourt.

New Dayton recruit has poise and confidence, former coach says
https://www.daytondailynews.com/spor...K2I5HK55BWTCI/
Excerpts:
Massiah said the decision by Elvis to pick Dayton came down to his relationship with coach Anthony Grant, and that was built during a virtual recruiting process.
Massiah played for St. Bonaventure from 1998-2002, so he knows UD Arena well. He was able to give Elvis an idea of what he would experience as a Flyer.
“I told him this is one of the top atmospheres in college basketball,” Massiah said. “This is big-time basketball. It’s going to have a high-major feel.”
“It was just a bad experience,” Massiah said. “He was looking for a fresh start. No hard feelings. They obviously made a coaching change. There was just a lot of change. I think part of the reason he chose Dayton was for stability. He was looking for a coach who is going to be there.”

Competition for playing time should be intense, which IMHO makes us a better team. Could some egos be bruised? Possibly, but AG should put on the floor the best team he possibly can. So, is Elvis a replacement for Cohill? It is sad to see the demise of DePaul as a college basketball power. I remember Ray Meyer and son Joey (both as a player and coach) well when DePaul was not only competitive, but a legit power in college hoops. Remember, BG turned down DePaul not once but twice.

Bump. And you guys expect me us to throw a parade for the signing of a guy from Robert Morris.
And congrats Marysville, you've been consistent, even though you're never right.

I told you all Damar Hamlin would be a bust. Heck I'll bet he doesn't record a single tackle next year. Whoever signed him should be fired.
