Cha-Ching. Racking up a highly talented team that can run a position less offense, and some rebounding/defensive swag.

Grant hinted that Sissoko had some long term injury issues when he had surgery and that surgery might solve them. His injuries might have been more severe than what has been released.

I think STF may be on to something. I can't believe Sissoko returns in light of this commitment. Seems to have come out of nowhere. He just entered the portal 3 days ago and scored 28 points as a Freshman. I don't think anyone had him on their BINGO card, did they?

Averaged 1.5 ppg at ETSU last year, but looks like good long term potential. Glad to see it, we needed help in at area.

I agree with the others above, something going on behind the scenes we don't know about. No way they use the last ship on a project big with all the other names we are associated with still undecided (Watts, Fox, Lundy, etc.).

Yeah, doesn't make much sense to me unless Sissoko is very questionable physically. I understand that we need that big bull for periodic matchup reasons, but don't see the need to have depth for that role unless a great player of such wants to sign with us.

The only other thing that maybe makes sense is that with all the paint players we have now, adding another that expects lots of minutes isn't feasible and Amaefule will be happy to be just emergency depth like we had with Gavrilovic back in 2013. Also, maybe he and Sissoko need each other to practice against for when going against a big brute in real games.

Hey, before we played Stanford in the sweet 16, I told people that I wouldn't be surprised to see Gavs get some minutes in that game due to their size. Sure enough, Kavs, Scott and Robinson all got in foul trouble in the first half and Gavs came in to clean up the rebounds to get us to the half. For that One Shining Moment, I'll always be glad we had him.

This kid in no Sissoko. He is a thin bodied athlete with decent hands, handle and a smooth outside shot. He has gone through some injuries which slowed his progress.

From Rivals: "A 6-foot-9 center by way of England, Amaefule left an immediate mark on the recruiting world whenever he dominated the 16-under Nike circuit with the Texas Titans bunch two years ago. Moving into the Rivals150 as a sophomore, Amaefule received a bevy of high-major offers and interest entering his crucial senior summer. However, he fought through an injury-riddled string of months that led to a lateral ligament reconstruction surgery last October and failed to suit up this past winter on the high school scene, slowing his recruitment to a halt.

Picking ETSU over New Mexico, San Diego and Western Kentucky, Amaefule could be someone that, if health is finally on his side, which seems to be the case, could be a tremendous haul for Shay and his staff over the long haul. The hiring of Greg Heiar played a major part in which the former LSU assistant had previously recruited him to the SEC program before switching employers this spring.

Amaefule is an active, good-sized big man with a well-proportioned body and frame. He can score inside and out, while possessing a quality IQ for the game. Most of all, he is an above average athlete that can make shots from 20-feet and in, score at the rim and defend both frontcourt spots. If healthy, the chance that Amaefule would not have played at the high-major level would have been rather minimal."

After reading what Jack posted and also reading the article from ETSU when he signed there, this signing makes a little more sense. From what I can gather, he was starting to blow up JR year in HS before missing his entire SR year to injury. Being the number 8 player in TX and #18 PF overall during his JR shows he has talent. It's normally that second year removed from major surgery that you see a big improvement. Hopefully he follows that trend for us and gets back to his former Top150 potential.

I in no way am saying skinny. Thin body means he is not Sissiko at 250 lbs or Jordy at 280 lbs. Amzil is his size. Room for some weight and plenty of muscle.

This video is from almost two years ago (summer between his junior and senior years). It shows him scoring a variety of ways, including multiple times when he got the ball outside the 3-point line and took his man to the hoop off the dribble.

Although the video is just high school stuff boy did we get more mobile in the middle. This is Grant's style of a 5. Run the court, catch the ball and go to the hoop. Obviously he didn't show much of that this year but with a good summer and fall, who knows what we will have here.

OK I may have been hasty not knowing about the injury. I can see swinging for the fences on this, might sit the bench quite a bit next year (GET HEALTHY BIG MAN) while doing rehab, a little spot duty, and blow up by the time he's an upperclassman?? Maybe he's ready now, who knows. AG probably does.

If history is a guide, at least 1 big will have an injury we'll be glad we have several. Good get, AG.

For now he's "Richard", "RA", "Dick", "Rick" or "Rich". No need to make it more complicated than that.

Looked it up Ah-mah-fuel was the most consistent I found.

Edit: What is linked in a post below is probably more accurate than what I found using google.

Agree. Richard's job when he's out there will be to be a tough defender, rebound, make the outlet pass, sprint to the rim. His opportunities to score will come on put backs and lobs. In other words, he is there to do the dirty work. Washington, Holmes and Amzil are guys who make plays facing the basket and will have a more expansive role in the offense. So I can see the kid filling a role, though I agree with others it makes more sense if Sissoko isn't planning to come back.

Don’t forget Camara, who may be the best of the bunch. There is going to be a bunch of competition between a lot of very talented bigs.

Which kinda makes me wonder if AG is prepared to see who is game ready, and let 1 of them ride the pine as a conditional red shirt based on how game-ready they each are and how the season progresses (injuries).

At this time of year we always think we've got 13 game-ready players for next year, but invariably, at least 2 or 3 aren't developed enough to play just yet. Which is fine.

I’m not giddy . Looks like a real project. Didn’t do anything at a minor school that largely played nobodies. Against one real team- Alabama- he played 8 minutes- 2 turn overs and 4 fouls! A very 2019 Jordy type game. Maybe in a few years he’ll turn into a productive player- but I’d rather have a guard who can shoot.

I don't agree with the shot taken at Jordy here, but otherwise I don't disagree. The criticism is fair -- Richard's body of work isn't great though (as others have mentioned) he probably wasn't fully healthy. But as the roster is currently constructed, I also would have preferred a guard who can shoot. But maybe a senior from last year is coming back. Or maybe another guy is leaving.

he was a 3 star top 150 recruit, who drew
interest from LSU and TCU. He had an
ankle injury in his senior year in high school
and missed his senior season...

before deciding on ETSU, he had offers from
New Mexico, San Diego and Western Kentucky.
he was one of 10 ETSU players to enter the
transfer portal after their coach was fired... He
was the 8th rated HS basketball player in Dallas
his junior year in HS..

CAG sees something... and I tend to agree,
this may not mean he is using the last
scholarship...

This is certainly an interesting decision by Grant. I cannot ever remembering getting a transfer from a smaller school with such a small statistical background. My guess is that there is something that the coaches saw from his work while in high school that they really liked. I am assuming that they knew of this kid from previous years and jumped at the chance to get him since it happen so quickly. I am going to leave it to the experts that actually get paid to make these decisions verses the rest of us that are currently undefeated from our armchairs in the living room.

Hoping to hit lightening in a bottle.

Wonder if he's more of a developmental big; someone who understands he might not get 25 minutes a night out of the gates. Maybe he's committed to playing three or four years here even as a backup. There'd be a ton of value in something like that. Allows for some stability and ultimately maturity.

Shot at Jordy?? Did you watch him two years ago?? He was a flaming train wreck. He started fouling on the way into the game and didn’t stop until he was disqualified minutes later!!

If you look at his HS tape prior to his injury he was a big time recruit. The staff must think he’s near 100%.

I suspect we have no shot at Ty Ty and Grant has gone forward. Probably means he will no longer go after the DII or Penn St kids. Hopefully we have one more scholarship and are still in the running for the Mich St guy, or another guard.

I think it makes a lot of sense if you go in with the belief that Sissoko won't be with the team next season. Whether that happens or not remains to be seen.

Crutcher and Watson? Chase Johnson? Sissiko? Chatman and Frazier out. Someone else transferring after seeing handwriting on the wall? How many potential open schollies?

I suppose there could be more transfers but who? I don't see any of the other guards wanting to transfer as there is plenty of PT to go around. Sissoko, as pointed out repeatedly above, seems to be the big variable here and the only source of a potential open scholarship.

By what date do you think someone transferring out would put their name in the portal? It seems to me the longer they wait the less opportunities available to them. I would think they need to do it soon if they are going to do it at all.

I agree, if they are going to transfer and

pretty quick...

Keep in mind more than likely said players handlers (parents, mentors and other close family members) are and have been working behind the scenes to choose a so-called better situation(s) for the player. This has been the norm for many years even during “normal” times. Once a spot/role has been agreed upon at the chosen destination the player will announce his/her portal intention and soon a signing will be a announced. At times the handlers do not feel a better situation has not come about, so the player may stay put for another year.

Thin bodied? He is jacked up in his twitter announcement. Dude is well marbled.

AG and STAFF def see something in him . I'm all in too.

Most likely we dont see big benefit until.2023 season. Hell adjust next year to the change, get his feet wet. And prosper in soph and junior years.

Great news!

In the little bit of video that I have seen of him, he looks like he has a strong body and some inside the lane presence. He looks like he has some of the in-the-lane toughness that I like to see.

I'm all for this get and excited about Camara as well. Both of those guys will make us physically tougher, which is what I thought we needed desperately.

Jordy's is not an open scholarship slot. With the free year, I believe that scholarship was personal to him and is not transferable.

Correct, and if a senior transfers, like Rodney, they will count against the new school's 13 scholarships.

What little I have seen of Amaefule, he appears to have the same athleticism as Holmes.

One player has had the opportunity to play tougher competition on a national scale, and receive the notoriety that goes with it. And well deserved. The other has similar athleticism but did not have the same opportunity. His whole world is in front of him.

Now they will get to play together and hone their skills. This is an awesome deal for Richard. He brings athleticism, a years experience in D1, and maturity.

This could be a really good win/win for the Flyers and both players.

Great point. I never thought about that.

And I'm guessing these free/personal scholarships only count for 5th year players playing at the same school that they played for during 2020-2021 through to their 5th season. So let's say Brea plays for the next 4 seasons, UD would get the extra scholarship to give to him in 2024-2025 only. Is this right?

I believe that’s correct. Brea would have 4 more seasons and the “extra” scholarship would only apply to him at UD in his “Fifth” season. So for this upcoming season the Flyers have 13 total scholarships available plus any senior ( a player who has used up his 4 year eligibility) who decides to stay.
It is somewhat chaotic but hopefully it will work itself out in the next few cycles.

Personally, I look forward to the day this no longer applies. Seems too messy to me. But, in the 2024-2025 season, it'll be interesting to see how many players are playing their 5th seasons with the same team. I'm going to guess it'll be minuscule.

Only seniors returning this season won't count against the scholarship limits. It does not apply to future years.

Thanks. That's good to know. IMO, the Flyers will probably only have one player that plays a 5th season and that's Weaver. If I had to guess on a 2nd player it would be Amzil. Those are the two players that weren't supposed to play last season so Weaver was in the plans for 21-23 and Amzil 21-25. Only reason I don't believe Amzil will make it to 2025 is that I think he will want to leave earlier for the pros.

That's the key question. Does he head out early for a pro league, or hang on a year to try to go straight to the NBA. His development curve will define that answer.

20th according to 24/7 Sports, but Amaefule is not listed https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Ba...eTeamRankings/

22nd in SI, but their data appears to be incorrect https://www.si.com/college/recruitin...eriod-michigan

So it may be a few more days before the Flyers ranking is updated.

Not necessarily.

Tony Dorsett changed the pronunciation of his name while at the University of Pittsburgh.

True, but the proper German pronunciation of the vowel sequence “ei” is to make the “i” long and the “e” silent, so his name should have been pronounced “Thighsman” (or “Tighsman”) in the first place. Otherwise, the award would have been called the “Heesman” Trophy.

Adding in a guy averaging 1.5 ppg for perennial powerhouse ETSU has to move the needle! Whatever we were before should go up by at least .000005.

Typical one sided approach. Do a little research before your poor thought out comments. Watch a little video, this kid has skills. Thank God there is UDScott so you are not the most worthless commenter on here.

Amaefule has yet to step foot on campus and is already getting ripped by this idiot. SMH

That’s amazingly lazy analysis. If you knew anything you’d know he was coming off a major injury and didn’t get to campus at E. Tenn until September so he was behind on the learning curve.

I'll say this... if Amaefule turns into a star at UD, Anthony Grant comes away looking like an absolute genius in the same vein that taking a very lightly recruited kid and turning him into an NBA lottery pick makes you look like an absolute genius, and national coach of the year to boot.

If he isn't good enough to see the court, it'll be very easy to say as much should be expected given his inability to earn playing time (injury aside) at ETSU. Of course, if he isn't good enough, he'll likely transfer again as that is the way college basketball works these todays.

Clearly, Grant sees something in this kid, but he's definitely gambling to some degree here. Here's to hoping this lotto ticket hits.

Huh? Like Amzil who also got here even later yet became a very viable player at our level? Yet RA couldn’t contribute anything at a school that played no one? Who after 6 months “on campus” was still irrelevant and statistics show him getting even less time and contributing even less.

Analysis?? What’s to analyze? He looks like a Detwon Rogers clone. I guess he went to this powerhouse because Duke was too far to travel!

I was simply replying to a query asking what RA added to our incoming teams ranking- hopefully he adds something, but from what he’s shown previously he adds zero.

Does everyone we recruit have to be adored? Or can’t someone point out that some look less than worthy? No need to answer, you are probably too busy polishing your Luke Frazier shrine!

Sigh.
I know, it's just a message board, and people can say what they want, and I should just ignore things. But ya know, there are approaches besides insulting each other as "amazingly lazy" and prefacing arguments with phrases like, "if you knew anything ..."

We could also go without calling brand-new recruits "irrelevant" and saying "he adds zero" before a 20-year-old who's attempted 22 college FG has ever stepped on campus. ... or trying to score points off each other with mocking "shrine" statements at the expense of former Flyers.

As a pre-emptive statement, yep, you're absolutely right that we all have the right to make the points we want, in the verbiage we choose. ...... Or, ya know, we could try to be civil, and listen, and discuss ...... Sorry, out-of-touch guy born in the wrong era checking out. Cheers.

I was talking to this guy at the dog park once, he was a former Dallas police officer. He pulled over Tony Dorsett one time and gave him a speeding ticket, but he did not know who TD was.

During the traffic stop, he pronounced Dorsett's last name as Mr. Dorsit(door-sit). TD corrected him and said that it was Dorsett(door-set). It probably did not help TD's situation that he corrected a police officer's mispronunciation of his last name during a traffic stop.

Back at the police station later, he told a fellow officer about the encounter, the fellow officer was surprised that he did not know who TD was.
