Rumor: Anthony Solomon to take ND gig
Per Pete Thamel:
@PeteThamel
Sources: Notre Dame is targeting former assistant Anthony Solomon, now associate HC at Dayton, to return to Mike Brey's basketball staff. He's expected to become ND’s associate head coach in the near future.
Were it to come true, it'd be interesting to see how the dominoes fall. James Kane is currently unemployed. I've mentioned John Brannen before, though he's obviously a bit of a liability right now. He worked for Grant for quite a stretch, nine seasons, including as his associate head coach at Alabama.
My best guess would be Brett Comer takes an assistant coach's gig, Greer moves to the big seat and they backfill on Comer (maybe James Haring should have stuck around).

Jon Rothstein@JonRothstein
Sources: Notre Dame's Mike Brey is expected to hire Dayton's Anthony Solomon as an assistant coach. Solomon has previously worked for Brey.

I would be absolute shocked if it's Comer. Nothing against him, but unless he is some coaching prodigy, I would expect someone with experience to fill the role.

Well, Comer doesn't take the associate head coach position. Everyone gets a promotion. It's what you do to instill continuity. If you like your staff and want to keep people happy, you reward them. Given his recruiting chops, I'd think Greer is probably viewed as the top assistant on the staff.
And I have no inside information whatsoever, but promoting from administrative roles to a basketball role is really common. If they think, Comer has a bright future, nobody would bat an eye hiring him to the staff at 29 years old. I've always got the impression he's part of the inner circle. He was with Obi at the draft. But what do I know.

James Kane is the most likely candidate. Rumored to have already met with AG a couple weeks ago.

I get what you are saying, but losing an associate HC with the experience of SLO and replacing him with Comer is far from ideal. Especially, after promoting Hertz with no assistant coaching experience just a few years ago. You need to fill the role with an experienced coach this time around. If Hertz or Greer left, I would get it because we would still have SLO as the experienced assistant on the bench.

Good luck to coach Solomon I suppose; I wonder if it was money, opportunity or prestige that drove him to accept that position. Anyhoo, seemed like a fine man.
Its gotta be Greer that takes over his position. I'm sure other schools were interested in hiring him as their top assistant. He's got relatively young kids still and may not want to move around a ton before landing his first head coaching gig (I assume that is his dream). This will allow him to get a well deserved promotion and set him up to land that first head coaching gig down the road.
While John Branen and CAG are tight, Brannen is toxic right now and hiring him for that role, while overlooking greer would be a double mistake. However, there are likely some assistants on his staff that need employment and perhaps one of them help back fill that opening created by Greer's promotion.

Fun to think about, but I would assume he'd like to exhaust his playing career first.

If Grant keeps the current adminstative structure, I look for Comer to possibly move to DOBO to replace Haring (unless that's a lateral move??) Greer to replace Solomon and Kane to replace Greer. Someone new to be DOBO or Director of Player Development.

I find this a very odd move. Anthony could stay here for years as the top assistant. Mike Brey’s seat is extremely hot and there were rumors last year that he may retire at the end of last season.
Why move from security to a very unknown future? I’m guessing there is more to this story...

I have a feeling when Notre Dame parts way with Brey they are going to go for a clean break. I can't think of many examples where a school will hire the assistant coach after firing the head coach

Solomon has never received the credit he deserves for bringing in Obi Toppin. For as much credit that is given to Kane for Crutcher, it's odd to me how much this gets overlooked.

Agree. But outsiders don't know anything about the arrangement among AS, Brey and the ND AD. Is it not possible that this is part of a succession plan in which Brey retires after the coming season to be replaced by AS?
That's a very different scenario than a long time assistant being elevated after a firing. If the situation I've described is not in the cards AS is, indeed, risking a very secure position at UD for a tenuous likely short-lived stint at ND. Right?
Considering AS prior head coaching experience and his strong ties to ND, It's really hard to understand this move, if true, unless the ND head coaching job is part of the picture. AS worked at ND for several years under the current ND AD, Jack Swarbrick, so he is very well known by the guy who will make the decision re Brey's replacement. Maybe Swarbrick really likes AS. Just wild speculation, right?
