We have guards and we have forwards. We need a consistent outside shooter to add to the mix, whether a guard, forward or already on the roster or coming here. Jalen and Ibi will be missed.
We also need a big, as Sissoko does not appear to be the answer. Bigs for post ups, defense and rebounding is not great now, and when Jordy leaves, or stays, it is still a need.

I think the best lineup for the team this year has been playing small and using Zimi as the center. I'm not sure the Jordy, Kurt, Sean Finn style big guy is the way to go
Sissoko it seems like everyone has written off but I still think he's gotta be viewed in the lens of being a project. Who knows the quality of coaching he got before he came over here. If he payoffs I've always thought it was going to take a couple years

I would take Kurt and/or Finn right now in a heartbeat, either at their prime or as newbies with four years to play.

If you watch the first part of the game, Montverde’s big man, Jalen Duran, one of the best players in the country, goes up for what looks like an easy dunk and DaRon comes out of nowhere and rejects it. Very impressive. Can’t wait to see him next year. Our front court is going to be very strong.

That looked like a highlight film of Montverde. Our guy surely has more than what showed up in that clip. I'd like to see a recording of our guy.

Really like that DaRon played aggressive defense, and that he looked to pass, and made some excellent passes. He needs to gain some muscle and weight and polish on his dribble. From that game, at least, he is not much of a shooter.

It's from the Montverde Invitational so yeah, it's gonna feature their boys. Next tilts vs. Oak Hill today and Sunrise Christian on Saturday should be more balanced.

Just pulled up the stats from Compass vs Oak Hill and Compass is up 45-20 at half. Oak Hill is a top 15 team. DaRon is killing it in the first half-14 points on 6-6 shooting including a 3. He will be the most talented player on the court for us next year IMO.

Really excited for Holmes (and Washington and Smith) to join the program, but I think Holmes is going to need some time to develop. I don't see a player that's especially big, athletic or skilled. He looks smart and active, and judging by interviews I get the sense he's pretty driven. If he sticks around, I think he'll likely be all conference toward the tail-end of his career, but I don't expect a ton from him his freshman year.

What? You haven’t seen much of him apparently. He’s playing against McDonalds AA’s and over achieving. He’s very athletic and is averaging 4 blocks per game and runs the court and can bring the ball up end to end.

He looks very long, lean and athletic to me. Nice touch from 12 feet and finishes around the bucket. If he puts on 20 pounds of muscle, he is going to be a load for defenders next year.

True, but Sean Miller, Steve Wojciechowski, Bobby Hurley, Bill Self, Eric Musselman, Anthony Grant and several other high major D1 coaches are all over 40. Their perspective matters most.

Holmes is impressive in many ways, but I am especially pleased with his defense. He moves his feet really well. He is very quick off the floor. Shot blocker. He seems to get his hands on everything in the air.
That game looked like a college game with the level of competition, and he was still shining.

DaRon erased at least six shot attempts that I counted and also deflected several passes. Old schoolers like me will recall Marvin Webster, whose nickname was “The Human Eraser.” While not as big as Webster, Holmes has the innate defensive instincts to be that kind of game-changer on the defensive end.

Shot Blockers
are fun on the playground. With the current rules on verticality they seem to foul out early in college games or spend a lot of time on the bench. CAG doesn't seem to be a big proponent of shot blocking.

Sunrise Academy frontline has 6-8 forward Kendall Brown signed with Baylor, C/F 6-10 Kenny Pohto signed with Minnesota ,and C 6-11 Zach Clemence signed with Kansas.. So he was going against great competition and he played great against that competition !

I just watched the entire game. Grant will love Holmes for his defensive energy and the fact that his team runs the same offense as UD. He will have to get rid of some of those illegal moving picks he has been allowed in HS. Holmes once again showed little on offense, but they tend to bury him in the corner, and their guards love to shoot. Not a great leaper, but good enough, and he has a great wingspan. He definitely needs 20+ lbs of muscle.

Last years #3 team in the Nation had 109 blocks for the year or 3.5 per game , led by Obi with 38. And then Ryan Mikesell with 20 - so far this yea r we have 20 blocks led by Jordy with 6. Me thinks AG ok with blocking shots just have to have guys with the ability !

Questions: 1) With Chase hanging it up for good we have two (2) scholarships available for 2021?
2) If a departing senior decides to stay that does not count against total scholarship numbers?

2. You get your normal amount of scholarships plus the additional amount of seniors staying for one more year.

any senior could come back,

a bit off topic, but anyone know how

The other consideration is we have at least three good players coming in next year. How fair is it to those three, who signed expecting playing time, to all of a sudden have it blocked by a senior staying over? Would Grant weigh in, or would he welcome the senior(s) back and risk ticking off the freshmen.

I would be stunned to see if any senior returns next year. Most are on their 5th year already. Jalen, the lone 4 year player needs to earn some cash for all his great plays.

For the huge majority of 4 year basketball players, the investment in making sure you get the degree is still the best bet. I would take the extra year, get the degree and enjoy the brand of basketball we have to offer for another year.
The jury is still out on that decision for all those not named Clutcher.

But Jordy, Rodney, and Ibi have already been in school for 5 years.

Oh my, that is impressive - complete game: Hops, jump shot, blocking shots, running the court, and rebounding...what a complete package.

Agreed. These guys only have so many years of earning capacity and they will already be 23-24 years old.

His High School team uses him to bring the ball up the court frequently. Very athletic with a good handle.

Next year will be interesting. In theory, we won't lose anyone from next years team (Cohill/Weaver will be the only 4 year players, and I would imagine they are coming back for a 5th).
So if AG adds a couple of sit 1/play 2 transfers, then he's taken himself out of the recruiting game in 2022.
I could see a grad transfer, but that's about it. He needs to leave room to continue the recruiting momentum he has.
And maybe I have that all wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

This team should always look for a grad transfer if "said" player is the right guy, imo. The way rosters manipulate today via guys not panning out, leaving early, transferring, injuries, etc. If Gonzaga is constantly in that market then so should UD.
This really effects a wide array of college teams from top tier college teams that lose stud players early on to the NBA to mid-major teams that may have players that just don't develop quick enough or at all. To find a nice plug-in transfer that has experience, veteran leadership and some real skills is a huge remedy.
Unless Crutcher or Ibi comes back, there's at least 15-16 points and a go-to-guy that left the gym and by looking at this current roster only as we sit today, I don't see close to a go-to guy. Can that change? Sure, but the ol' "bird in the hand" mantra isn't an option with this team going into next year, imo.

Cohill has already been anointed as that go-to-guy and lock-down defender. Aren't you paying attention?!

Unless some new blood arrives next year (other than the three recruits), we will have NO seniors on the team and only two (Weaver and Cohill) the next year. Talk about an unbalanced roster!

We should pray, and pray hard for a transfer or some of the seniors to stay and play guard. Otherwise Cohill, who’s rehab is unknown and Weaver would seem the early leaders in the backcourt, neither being a strong outside shooter. A completely ineffective Brea and Smith as a freshman are unlikely to be breakout players.
While we lose 50% of our scoring in Ibi and Crutcher.
It could get ugly.

You're typically a drag on this board, but you're on point here.
Dayton's biggest problem right now is a lack of talent (and experience). Losing the team's two best players by a longshot is going to hurt. As good as next year's freshman class will be, it's crazy to think they'll lead the way.
Without a major talent infusion this offseason, the 21-22 campaign is going to be rough.

Frazier is a guard too. Despite this year’s underachievement, I trust our staff to assess our talent vs future needs. They know better than the geniuses on this board what high level transfers have meant to the program.
Strictly a guess, but I’d say Chatman most likely senior to return for free year. I’d say Ibi and Jalen will choose to go pro. Not sure if we’d beg Jordy to stay.

Underachiever! Wow what an understatement. He’s gotten in one game for a total of 6 minutes. He’s way better than even money to be gone. He doesn’t appear remotely ready to play at our level.

Back to your dumb old ways.
Frazier is a complete unknown right now. He was never scheduled for big minutes this year. Throw in the pandemic and lack of offseason training and an appendicitis to start out the year, and he's more than behind the 8-ball. Wwwaaayyy too early to make a judgement on him.
Hope Grant and his staff are hard at work in digging out some talent for next year, be it late 2021 signees or transfers. We're going to need it.

How many times have we seen teams lose the top scorer, and actually get better the next year, because they play more as a team? Not the case with Obi, as he was CPY and the consummate team player/leader, but could happen next year.

Ok, this is pure speculation on my part, but PG Lynn Greer III is announcing his college choice tomorrow. According to my son, he just began following Andy Farrell, Obi, and Brett Comer on Instagram. He is a very good recruit with P5 offers (Florida, Temple, Iowa, Oregon, Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown) IF this happens, it would be a huge get by CAG and staff. And yes, he is the son of former Temple Guard, Lynn Greer Jr.
Ihsgolf19, do you have any additional information?

And yes, he is the son of former Temple Guard, Lynn Greer Jr.
Ihsgolf19, do you have any additional information?

He is very, very impressive - his quick first step reminds me of Delonte West; he really elevates on that pull-up jumper (poetry in motion!), and that spin-move reminds me of Tiny Archibald. Wow, what a get he would be. He and Mali would make an ideal dual-point guard offense.

For what it’s worth, Rivals says he’s 100% coming to Dayton.

Oh my, he looks far bigger and stronger than 165 pounds. That has to be wrong. I would guess closer to 180. If Rivals is correct with their 100% to Dayton, that would be incredible. Seriously, he and Mali would be a great guard tandem.

Why is he only a 3-star? Below they had him as a 4-star. Regardless, this young man is an incredibly skilled player.
