12-20 LUC in the first set. TO UD. we need to settle down. Not getting good sets to our hitters. They are playing faster than we are. Lexie just scored so we need to just relax and play focused.

LUC takes the 1st set. We have to let it go and jump on them early in the 2nd. What I liked is we are getting block touches and we had 3 blocks. We are going to need our. Lock to beat LUC. They have the SOY, so it’s a big ask to read the setter and get the block set, but we did it well in the first set. Take that to the next level to get this turned around. Block touches are important because you are close to getting the stops. We also had too many service errors going long. That’s a settle down issue.

All tied up 1-1. LUC fought off 2 set points but couldn’t get a 3rd. Flyers take the set 25-23.
Half time. Come out on fire. It’s a dog fight.

Team wearing red. Band in navy and entertaining the crowd over half. Amelia talking to the team at halftime. Let’s go Flyers. We do need to get the ball to the MBs. Better passing. It’s not easy. LUC a good serving team.

LUC dominates the 3rd set. Let it go and come out fighting back. We’ve got to get better passing this set. And get our MBs going to free up the outsides. And their Libero is handling our serves. We did start going elsewhere this set. Still serving long too often. Just get this set. That’s all that matters.

LUC burns their last TO behind 12-6. Keep the pressure on Flyers. Do not let them back in this set.

UD up 17-15 but 3 point run by LUC and TH takes his first TO. In the past he would go 4 sometimes 5 points before a TO. With this team he started going 3 points a couple weeks ago. It was a start coaching decision.

3 more LUC points. They go up 18-17. UD takes their 2nd TO. Both teams out of TOs. We are at that 17ish point mark in this set. What team is going to raise their play and limit errors while scoring their own points? It’s go time ladies.

LUC holds on to win 25-23 and takes the championship match 3-1. It was tied 18-18. We took the lead at 19-18 but made 4 errors the rest of the way and lost by 2. They made no errors after the 18-18 tie. Both teams generated kills. Flyers had 5 kills. Ramblers only 3, but our 4 errors were the difference.

Here is the good news…this team pulled it together this weekend and everyone returns except Grace and Livie. There were matches we had two freshmen holding down the back court passing to a sophomore setter. That’s 2 of the 3 touches on most plays by young players. And about a third of the time the 3rd touch was by a sophomore or freshman.
Our backcourt is going to be really strong next year with Anna, Karrissa and Emily forming the foundation with a heck of a lot more experience. Lexie will go 6 rotations and I expect Taylor Russell will spend the off-season working on her back row skills. She passes pretty well right now. She can be really good next year and go 6. And we have another Libero player coming in the fall. Will this be a Horsmon first…and he red shirts a Libero? I have no idea, but we will be deep in talent.
You want your team to play it’s best at the end of the season. After a lot of challenges over three months, this team did. Congrats. Hit the books and finish strong in the classroom. Come back in January and ready to get after it again.

I think we got about a far as our consistency would take us this year. It was just a mighty struggle all season to put one excellent performance after another -- let alone the issue within the matches of putting excellent sets together one after another. Its fair to say the best team in the A10 all year is deservedly repping the A10 in the NCAAs. They beat us in the rubber match so "you are what your record says you are."
Horsmon is not used to these kinds of seasons where the solution never really materializes. In so many years we start off a bit of a hot mess, but then figure it out by the last third of the year and somehow wrap it into an A10 title and NCAA bid. Those answers just never came in 2022. Im sure not for a lack of trying. We did play a lot of young players, had some injuries too. But we also had experience at the net and size nobody else has -- I dont think anyone in the program will be happy w/the result since they feel anything short of 1st place is just window dressing. They have high expectations of themselves. That drive to not accept less is whats kept the program at a high level. I dont think that DNA has suddenly disappeared but rather taken a short break. 2023 will be an interesting season to see if we can recapture the "A10 bully" persona.

I’m guessing as much of a rollercoaster this year was with injuries, illness and lack of consistency…in the back of my mind I hear Horsmon saying, “Still better than the Maryland job.”
Another 20 wins season. We took the long road to get it but I’m glad we got the 2 Tournament wins to get to 20. The Spring should be fun. They will work with the strength and conditioning coach and in small groups on weaknesses for a couple months. Then start Spring practices with everyone which will be great because the roster is full. Last year we were just trying to field a rotation whomever. Hopefully we play a full Spring schedule this year. We haven’t done that for awhile.

You probably mean NIVC. Unfortunately, the NIVC website is down, but their twitter lists 4 teams already in, Binghamton, Liberty, Houston Christian and Texas Rio Grande. Looking at last years teams against the RPI from after the tournaments were over, the teams listed went from 38 through 294. No A10 team participated, but a few from big conferences did.
With Dayton at RPI 110, they (as well as everyone, seemingly) are definitely in the range to be chosen. Since there should be a 0% chance of the Flyers making the NCAA, you'd think NIVC is contacting them to see if they are showing interest.

Don't know if they'd be interested, but it seems like it'd be a good way to get more experience to younger players?

In the past Horsmon has said no to playing in this tournament. That can always change. During the championship match I kept thinking if we had 2 more weeks, we might have been there. So there is that. But I don’t think it will happen. On a side note, I’m not sure who funds the travel, etc for this tournament.

Thinking about it for 5 minutes…I’d play in this tourney like it’s extra spring matches. Let Livie and Grace start their one semester at UD without volleyball commitments now and field a team of next year’s players. Get a jump start on next year. Competition matches are always good and adding one or more because you can might be a good thing.

Field is out, and Dayton isn't in it. Plenty of teams below Dayton in the RPI that is in, so I wonder what the criteria for selection was. Davidson is playing North Dakota State in the NIVC.
Loyola got Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA. Hope they can give them a tough out.
