The Real Nitty Gritty

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Well kids, the 2021-2022 Flyer basketball checklist is almost complete:

Flyer Fan Fest: Check

“Secret Scrimmage” vs. WVU: Done

Exhibition game vs. Cedarville: In the books

Looks like the only thing left to do is to get down to the real nitty gritty and start the season already. The Red and Blue will do just that, when they tip off at home next Tuesday against the UIC Flames.

Until then, here is some reading material to kill the time.

-- SI.com ranked every D-1 team from 1-358, with our guys coming in at #67 and 3rd in the A-10:

-- Adam Finkelstein from ESPN.com has DaRon Holmes in his top 5 freshman in the Atlantic 10:

-- Toumani Camara is one of “30 under-the-radar transfers” according to Jon Rothstein:

-- Ricardo Greer mic'd up:

-- “The Hometown Coach” Mark Adams had a chance to see AG’s charges practice recently. His thoughts:

Watched @DaytonMBB. 3rd youngest roster in country. 11 Fr/1 soph/1 jr. Very long team, work in progress. Thinking/playing now, will need time/repetitions. Coach Grant and staff spend a lot of time teaching. Patience Flyer Fanatics. Talent is there. Will take time. Classy bunch!

-- UD will head back to the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas in 2022:

-- This is a great site to track injuries for every D-1 hoops program:

-- ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg is not a fan of secret scrimmages:

Secret Scrimmages are fact finding missions. First time against outside completion Coaches looking at different lineups. Some quarters teams will be playing secondary defenses. Never react to reports. Season is a journey. The scrimmages are the starting point

-- Ken Pom thinks that the NCAA should make 5 year eligibility permanent:

-- Huggy Bear believes the power conferences should leave the NCAA Tournament and create a new event:

TSN Mike and anyone else with half a brain disagrees:

Answer me this, Huggs: Did you feel the same way about the Big Dance when you were coaching at Akron?

-- Paul Biancardi of ESPN on his all time favorite basketball player, Dave Cowens:

“Big Red” was a favorite of mine, as well. Legendary Celtics GM Red Auerbach actually scouted Cowens when Florida State played Dayton. Auerbach left at halftime because he didn’t want to tip his hand to the other scouts in attendance that he had found the next great Celtics pivot man.

During Big Red’s rookie year I attended a Celtics/Royals game in the Cincinnati Gardens. I was rooting for Cowens and the Celts when the woman sitting next to me (who was doing likewise) said “You must be from Boston the way you are cheering for the Celtics.” I told her yes and asked if she was, as well. She said “No, I’m from here--I’m Dave Cowens’ mom.”

-- I still haven’t forgiven him for dancing on the UD Arena floor after his Detroit Titans beat the Flyers, but Dickie V needs our prayers as he battles lymphoma:

-- Halloween has come and gone, but any time is the right time to see and hear the only occasion that Vincent Price performed his monologue from the “Thriller” video on live TV:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
