DS/L Gaby Arroyo has entered the VB portal according to a post on volleytalk.
Flyers pick up a 6’3” Sophomore OH from…wait for it…Iceland. (You would have never guessed Iceland.) She was a freshman at Clemson last year. Did not play a lot- 12 sets. But she averaged 2.92 points/set. It wasn’t against snowflakes - 2 Notre Dame matches, 4 Louisville matches, 1 Stanford match and someone else. That’s pretty good for a freshman not getting a lot of chances. And her name…good luck with this one.
Lejla Sara Hadziredzepovic Hopefully she goes by Sara.

I’m starting to feel really bad for Gaby Arroyo. She’s a very good player. Probably wanted to go to a school she could play Libero her last two seasons. That ended up being Miami (FL) in her hometown. Her dad came to a lot of UD matches, but always seemed to be alone. Now her whole family can come to all her home matches. She left in January. Since then a bunch of Miami players have jumped into the portal. They lost their 2 best hitters and a total of 7 players. They signed 4, including Gaby, but only have 9 players on this year’s roster right now. It looks like they have 3 freshmen coming in. This is not the team she signed up to play for. I looks nothing like the team that made the Sweet 16 this last fall. I have to think she isn’t the only one. It’s a whole new dynamic players have to consider especially those that enter the winter portal. The portal closes in 2 days. Players can still jump in - and there have been a couple players who switched teams in January and for some reason didn’t like their new gig and are back in this spring. Can it get any crazier?
Just imagine how many in the portal wont even find a home. The portal has too much mediocrity in it.
Manual Counts of DI Indoor Portal Players - as of 5/14 - Portal still open and accepting players.
817 have entered the portal
346 DI Volleyball teams = average of 2.4 players per team have entered the portal
520 have signed with a new DI team = 63.6%
64 have dropped down to DII Teams = 7.8%
233 have not signed with another team = 28.5%
The Portal closes tomorrow - so there might be a few more players that enter. After that there will be more players who sign with new teams. There will be a lot more players who sign. There is no deadline for a team to sign players after the portal closes - unless you have a deadline to submit a roster to the NCAA - and I don’t know if there is or not - but it would probably be July or even in August before your first match. Additionally, many unsigned players were probably walk-ons. The roster limit is now 18. Only a small percentage of schools had 18 players on their rosters in the old system. 15-16 was probably the average for teams. Old scholarship limit was 12.
‘In the New probable system, you can still fill out your roster with a walk-on. I believe many schools that don’t have NIL funding or their school isn’t going to revenue share, or they don’t offer scholarships at all, will fill out their rosters with a solid percentage of the 233 players not yet signed.
I’ll look at this again early in July.
