BEVERLY HILLS (MI) — July 1st in the medical profession is often referred to as “Fright Night.” The reason being that on this date, all of the new interns, residents and doctors at every teaching hospital across the country assume their new positions for the first time, simultaneously. As my sister the nurse, a grizzled veteran of many a “Fright Night” at UMass Medical Center put it:

“July 1st is almost upon us, when 1st years are turned out and walk amongst us.”

At the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago, a young intern will take her first steps to becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
