Following a bounce-back road victory at Saint Louis on Friday night, the UD men's basketball team hosted Davidson on Tuesday evening at UD Arena. The Flyers escaped with a 69-63 win, helped out by a questionable technical foul on the Wildcats with under a minute remaining. The win keeps UD's faint NCAA at-large hopes alive heading out of the backstretch and into the third turn of the A10 schedule. Dayton improves to 16-7 (6-4) while Davidson falls to 13-9 (3-6).
UD and DC played twice last season as the Flyers won both contests, a 72-59 result in North Carolina followed by an 80-66 victory six weeks later at UD Arena. Dayton came into tonight's contest winners of nine in a row in the series dating back to a miserable 73-67 A10 Quarterfinal loss at PPG Paints Arena as the #1 seed. Wildcats guard Jack Gibbs scored 34 points in that game as UD went on to lose in the NCAA 1st Round to Wichita State a few days later in Indianapolis despite wearing the home whites. UD maintained a 11-5 overall record in the series.
The teams traded baskets early on until the Flyers opened up a modest lead by stringing together a Posh Alexander trey, Amael L'Etang deuce, and Zed Key alley-oop dunk for the 11-6 advantage. The Wildcats reeled Dayton back in however. UD's offense went south while Davidson found back-door layups on the other end to eventually tie the score at 18-18 with 6:40 remaining in the first half.
