Hey, I got my wish…the UD Athletic Dept. just released the Flyers A-10 schedule and the DuquesneDUQUESNE UNIVERSITY
Established: 1878
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Enrollment: 9,344
Type: Private Research
Affiliation: Catholic Spiritan Fathers
Nickname: Rams
Colors: Red and Blue game is on a Wednesday in February. Hello, Palumbo! See you there, Fly!
— Something tells me that Mrs. Swampy and I might find ourselves in Dayton to visit the elder Swampette the weekend of the X game.
— The Oak Park (MI) HS girls basketball team features a senior named Kandace Perryman. She’s gotta be related somehow, because that’s RP’s alma mater.
— I love FlyerHoops.net and the job that Matt Schwade has done with it since taking over from Greg Bilotta and Joe Lombardi. Heck, it was Greg and Joe who originally came up with the idea for me to write “From the Swamp.” But I’ll be damned if I’m gonna pay $8.95 a month for info on the Flyers that I used to get for free.
— The younger Swampette’s HS lost a football game to West Bloomfield the other night 61-58…in overtime! I don’t think they score that much when they play hoops.
— Alex Carmona has verballed to Memphis. What happened to his previous commitment to UD? One word: Padilla.
— Speaking of Carmona, he’s attending Winchendon Prep in my home state of MA. Winchendon is about 75 miles west of Boston and while it’s not in the middle of nowhere, it’s pretty close. Winchendon is nicknamed “Toy Town.” Sounds exciting doesn’t it, Alex? My HS classmate and UD MBA grad Jim Waite and his sister, current UD English prof Barbara Farrelly, grew up in Winchendon.
— About 25 miles to the east is my alma mater, Notre Dame Prep. The last time I looked there were at least 3 Top 50 recruits who were doing a “super-senior” year at ND. When I was there, we were ranked in the top 25 in the US for Forensics…how times change.
— Josh Higgins from Vandalia Butler to Western Kentucky. Good luck, big fella, I hope UD plays the Hilltoppers in the next 4 years so we can see how you’re doing.
— So who do you suppose former Flyer Jason Osborne rooted for when UD played his new school St. Francis (PA) in football?
— Vladimiras Severovas, the 6’6″ combo forward from the younger Swampette’s HS of whom I wrote about in my last column is being heavily recruited by Wright State. Hmmmm.
— Will not even qualifying for the medal round of the World Championships convince the powers that be in USA Basketball that we need to “force” our 12 best guys to play? I doubt it.
— We were in Indy for my nephew Ed’s wedding the weekend of the FIBA World Championship game and they literally could not give tickets away to the finals. It did provide Indy with a very International flavor, tho, having people from all over the world in town for the games.
— One of the guys who occasionally shows up at the YMCA in Birmingham where I play hoops at lunchtime is former NBA player and current CBA Head Coach, Jeff Grayer. He may be retired, but it’s obvious he still has “mad skills” and he’s probably only running at 50%. Playing with a guy like Jeff makes you realize that no matter how good a player you think you are, there is a very large, wide and deep gulf between an NBA-caliber guy and the rest of us.
That’s it “From the Swamp.”
