Josh Postorino, the Flyers’ senior point guard from Clearwater, FL, learned from doctors that a cyst in his brain failed to drain properly from surgery last season, forcing the former UD starter to sit out the 98-99 basketball season, and possibly quit competitive hoops for good.
Early last season Postorino complained of dizziness and fatigue, and a closer examination revealed a cyst located in his brain that necessitated the insertion of a shunt from the cyst to the abdomen so it could drain properly. Postorino played in 19 games season, seeing action just weeks after surgery, leaving many feeling that the problem had been taken care of. But he then missed the final few contests in 1998 for reasons relating to the procedure. Still, all indications were that Postorino expected a full recovery and to be 100% by tip-off this season.
As fall conditioning started, Josh complained of similar symptoms he experienced during the first go-round, and promptly alerted doctors of his ailments. After consulting with physicians, the coaching staff, and his family, Postorino decided an absence from basketball would give him the greatest chance to fully recover and lead a normal life.
The loss leaves Dayton with only two true point guards this season: veteran Edwin Young and newcomer David Morris, 5’10”, 190lb, from St. Vincent Palotti, MD. Due to Morris’ high credentials, many believed Postorino would get pushed to third in the rotation. It would have been the first time in several seasons the Flyers had three capable point guards at their disposal. On the other hand, last year’s team amassed 21 wins with Edwin Young logging heavy minutes as the only point guard available for the entire season. Even with Postorino’s absence, the Flyers should still be steady at the point guard position, and Andy Metzler has proven he can run the team in limited action as well.
While the Flyers stand to lose a spirited leader and depth off the bench, everyone concedes the health and well-being of Josh Postorino comes before winning basketball games.
