UD downs two Ohio foes, climbs charts…
Head Coach Dave Schureck’s squad made significant progress recently, downing Wright State 4-1 in the home opener and waxing Bowling Green 3-1 in a contest that contained wind and rain of biblical proportions. The two victories pushed the Flyers to a #4 ranking in the latest Great Lakes Region according to the latest NSCAA rankings – trailing Marquette, Indiana, and Ohio State.

In the latest NSCAA National Polls, the three teams above Dayton in the Great Lakes Region are ranked #7, #11, and #23.
The daisy chain principle…
The WSU Raiders were ranked #5 in the Great Lakes Region when Dayton shut them down, and Bowling Green played Creighton and SW Missouri State to one-goal games earlier in the season. In the latest power ratings released on Sep. 21, Creighton and SMSU were ranked #4 and #8 respectively in the country. The power ratings, provided by Soccer Information Systems (SIS), are equivalent to basketball’s Sagarin or RPI.

Suggs gets the nod…
Goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld was named Atlantic-10 Player of the Week after posting two consecutive shutouts – Xavier (4-0) and Air Force (3-0). According to the latest Atlantic-10 statistics released on Tuesday, Weisenfeld ranks second among all A-10 goalkeepers in Goals-Against-Average (0.98). Weisenfeld not only ranks among the best — if not the best — keepers in the conference, but is making a case as one of the best goalkeepers in the Great Lakes Region. Only a sophomore and just 5’3’’, Suggs is a virtual shoo-in for the Atlantic-10 All Conference 1st Team and has the potential to be one of the best keepers in the country before her career is over.
Gregg flying high…
Sophomore Missy Gregg is climbing in the national statistics released on Monday by the NCAA. Showtime is tied for 4th in the country in goals per game (1.22) and tied for 8th in the nation in points per game (2.78). Gregg leads the Atlantic-10 in goals (11) and points (25). The next closest player has 17 points. Should Gregg maintain her current pace and play in as many games as last season (23), she will break the womens soccer program’s career mark for points and goals before her junior year.

Melissa Buck is currently 8th in the conference in points (10) on three goals and four assists.
SoccerTimes gives props…
SoccerTimes.com recently named Showtime Gregg their Womens NCAA National Player of the Week for Sept. 18-24. Gregg scored five goals in her last two games and currently stands 4th all time at Dayton in career points and career goals — in less than a season and a half of college soccer.
In the rankings…
Mike Tucker’s Flyers received votes in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Region poll, but were ranked earlier in the year. Winners of six of their last seven games, if the Flyers win their next game and improve to 7-3, they will actually be ahead of last year’s team after 10 games. The 1999-00 Flyers won their next 12 games before losing to Notre Dame in the NCAA 2nd Rd.
Power ratings put UD on top…
Dayton is ranked 50th out of 274 D-I schools in the latest SIS power ratings, the highest of any Atlantic-10 team. The next-highest team is URI (#81) followed by UMass (#92).
War Eagle? Not so fast…
The Auburn Tigers are 8-1 on the season, including a win over Marquette, ranked 22nd nationally in the latest polls. Dayton is the lone school to beat Auburn, a 3-1 Flyer win in the second game of the Nike Clemson Invitational. Those three Flyer goals are the most given up by the Tigers this season.
200 and counting…
Dayton notched its 200th career victory for the womens program in Sunday’s 3-0 triumph over the Air Force Academy. Head Coach Mike Tucker is currently among the nations Top-25 most successful coaches based on winning percentage.

Where are the Muskies…
Xavier, one of the A-10 favorites, is 3-6 on the year and has been shut out in six games. The Muskies have scored just six goals in nine games — including a 4-0 defeat to Dayton — but recently won the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville with wins over Oregon and Tennessee.
FOOTBALL
Spiker, Spiker, and more Spiker…
Dayton redshirt freshman Kelly Spiker was named PFL Offensive Player of the Week, guiding the Flyers to a 55-14 thrashing of Morehead State. The Eagles, ranked #2 nationally according to Football Gazette’s IAA Non-Scholarship rankings, suffered their first loss of the season to the #3 Flyers. Spiker rushed for 142yds and two touchdowns while throwing for 161yds and two more scores. Spiker finished 5-5 in the passing department as the Flyers moved up to #2 in the rankings.
Yale goes down…
The Yale Bulldogs whipped up on the Flyers 42-6 two weekends ago, but couldn’t get past Ivy League co-favorite Cornell a week later 24-23. Last season, Yale lost their Ivy League opener 25-24 to Brown, then won their last nine games of the season.

Just win baby…
Pete Hoyer’s spikers ran their record to 9-4 with a three-set victory over Rhode Island at the Frericks Center on Saturday. One of the nine victories is over non DI opponent Western Ontario University. The Flyers have won four matches in a row and look to keep things rolling as they travel to Philadelphia this weekend for matches against A-10 members Temple and LaSalle.Movin’ up…
Junior Katie Ferreill recorded her 267th career block-assist over the weekend, moving her up to No. 2 all-time in block assists as the University of Dayton.

According to the latest volleyball statistics released by the Atlantic-10, Dayton ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage (.229), first in kills per game (16.72), assists per game (14.84), third in service aces per game (1.86), fifth in blocks per game (2.07), fourth in digs per game (15.37), and second in won-lost percentage (.667). Individually, UD’s Carla Muntz leads all conference players in assists per game (13.33), while Megan Pease leads the league in service aces (0.53).
