Kaz keeps kickin’…
Senior forward R.J. Kaszuba continues to lead the Atlantic-10 in scoring, stretching his overall lead by seven points over URI All-American Nick McCreath. Kaszuba has a league-leading 15 goals to go along with 4 assists for 34pts on the year. The Flyer scoring machine is tied for 4th nationally in points per game (2.62) and tied for 4th nationally once again in goals per game (1.15). The 1999 A-10 Second Team selection isn’t on the verge of breaking any conference scoring records in the immediate future, but Kaszuba has supplanted himself as a shoo-in for the A-10 First Team as well as a strong candidate for Player of the Year.
Sunday still scoring…
Not to be forgotten, sophomore forward Sunday Isename ranks fifth in the league in points, coming on eight goals and two assists. The Kaszuba-Isename combination is currently the highest-scoring duo in the league.
Movin’ on up, again…

URI, still undefeated in conference play, handed the Flyers a 5-2 loss at Baujan Field a year ago in a game that was much closer than the score indicated. In recent matches against Temple, Dayton and URI needed overtime to up-end the struggling Owls.

Gregg’s golden boot…
Sophomore All-American Missy Showtime Gregg is the current A-10 leader in points (42), goals (19), and game-winning goals (6). The next-closest player is URI’s Shannon Kittleson (27pts). On the national scene, the Alter HS product is currently 4th nationally in points per game (2.80) and 3rd nationally in goals per game (1.27).
High-flying Flyer…
Missy Gregg currently stands second all-time at the University of Dayton in career points and goals scored. Should she keep her current pace and the Flyers make the NCAAs, Gregg will become the school’s all-time leader in just half the time of anyone in the program’s history. Should Gregg surpass 59 points this year, she will break the conference single-season scoring record held by former Xavier standout Amanda Gruber.
In the bag…
Already a lock for the Atlantic-10 Player of the Year, the sophomore forward is one of 16 finalists named for the Hermann Trophy, college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy, given annually to the top male and female player in the nation.
POW x2…
Gregg won her second Atlantic-10 Player of the Week recently on the heels of a two-goal performance against St. Joseph’s in a 4-2 Flyer win, and a two-goal and one-assist performance against Temple in a 7-2 victory.
Weisenfeld still on top…
Goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld continues to dominate in the goalmouth. She leads the A-10 in overall goalkeeping with a 0.92 goals-against average (GAA) and is second in conference play with a 0.69 GAA. The sophomore leads all A-10 keepers in overall save percentage (0.872%) and conference save percentage (0.905%).
Egg-savier excellence…
The Xavier Musketeers, 9-6 (6-1), co-leaders with Dayton in the A-10 conference, have won eight in a row after starting the season 1-6. In fact, Dayton is the last team to beat the Muskies – a 4-0 victory in Cincinnati on Sep. 20. Since that time, Xavier has allowed just one goal and has shut out their last seven opponents by a combined score of 12-0. More remarkable is how XU overcame a horrific start to the season. In their first seven games of the year, XU was shutout in six contests and outscored by a combined count of 22-2. The rejuvenated Muskies have not conceded a goal since Sep. 22.
Big doins’…
Dayton’s make-or-break contests arrive on Friday and Sunday at Baujan Field. The Flyers entertain third place UMass, 9-5 (5-1), on Friday night at 7:30pm. The Minutewomen are just a half-game back and still very much alive in the A-10 title hunt. So too is Rhode Island. The fourth place Rams, 13-1-1 (4-1-1), go up against the Flyers on Sunday at 1pm. Xavier and Dayton play the same pair of teams on the same weekend for the remainder of the season, a reality that means at least two teams will likely be out of title contention by Monday. The Flyers control their own fate however. If Mike Tucker’s squad wins out, they win the A-10 regular season title for the third year in a row as Dayton will own all tie-break advantages.
VOLLEYBALL
Muntz’s milestone…
Senior setter Carla Muntz recently collected her 5000th career assist, good enough for tops all-time at the University of Dayton. The Spring Valley, IL, product currently leads the Flyers in assists and digs this year. Muntz leads the Atlantic-10 in assists per game (13.50).
And one…
Muntz received more good news this week as she was named Atlantic-10 Player of the Week for her strong showing in three Flyer victories. Muntz has helped the Flyers to four straight wins and a 13-7 (5-3) record. Dayton currently stands in fourth place in the conference standings, but has rematches against Temple, Xavier, and GW in the near future – teams ahead of the Flyers in the standings. Dayton’s latest victory was a 3-2 win over the Butler Bulldogs. Dayton also hosts the Atlantic-10 postseason tournament at the Frericks Center at the conclusion of the regular season. No way Jose…
Did you know the Frericks Center is the third-largest on-campus volleyball-only facility in the country? The palatial digs, formerly known as the UD Fieldhouse, seats 5,000 volleyball fans.
Statitudes…
Fellow Flyer Megan Pease is atop the A-10 in service aces per game (0.51) while teammate Katie Ferriell is currently third (0.44). Ferriell is the conference leader in blocks per game (1.38). As a team, Head Coach Pete Hoyer’s squad is currently first in the conference in kills (16.87), first in assists (15.00), second in hitting percentage (.230), second in service aces (1.84), second in blocks (2.40), and fourth in digs (16.12).

Tscholl’s triple play…

Tscholl was the second-fastest freshman in the race and helped the Flyers to an 11th place finish. The Canton, OH, native earned Rookie of the Week honors in the first week of the running season as well as the week of Sep. 25.
