BEVERLY HILLS (MI) — Call it what you will — insane, crazoid, unsustainable, bonkers, turbulent — the current mass exodus of college hoopsters via the transfer portal is a definite game changer. Over one thousand players have entered the portal before the NCAA has even crowned a National Champion, with more undoubtedly to come.
Take a look: https://watchstadium.com/college-basketballs-2020-21-transfer-list-10-26-2020/
While some transfers are the natural result of a coaching change, others defy explanation. And it’s not just weaker programs that are being affected. UC is losing six players; St. John’s eight; Colorado six; Georgia five, including former (and now current) AG recruiting target Toumani Camara.
And then there is The University of Tennessee at Martin, a D-1 program in the Ohio Valley Conference. Here is their team picture from last year:

What’s the first thing you notice? There are nineteen guys on the squad, four of whom have the notation “no longer with team.” Turns out that term applies to virtually everybody in that snapshot, as the Skyhawks have a total of sixteen players in the transfer portal! It seems that only #1, #13 and #23 are still enrolled at UT Martin. How is newly named Head Coach Ryan Ridder supposed to replenish the roster after an evacuation like that?
Thus far, the University of Dayton Flyers have remained relatively unscathed by this insanity, as only lightly used freshman Luke Frazier has submitted his name as an undergrad transfer, while senior Rodney Chatman has applied as a grad transfer, but could also end up playing professionally overseas.
One can only hope that this no-sit transfer nonsense is a one-time-only deal.
