Colors: Blue and Gold 5-0 before a small but vocal crowd at Baujan Field Sunday afternoon. The win is the sixth straight for the club, pushing their record to 7-2 (2-0) on the season.
While it’s true that Dayton gave LaSalle their worst beating of the season, it was apparent from the opening whistle that the Flyers were outclassing yet another opponent on the schedule. In fact, Dayton has been so much better than their last four opponents — Wright State, Bowling Green, Fordham, and now LaSalle — some are beginning to wonder if the early season losses to nationally-ranked Florida International and Ohio State were aberrations. It’s hard to imagine the Flyer team of the last two weeks falling to FIU by a 3-0 score again.
Dayton had chances all afternoon to find the back of the net. R.J. Kaszuba got on the board with a clever spin-and-shoot at the 18yd line that found the corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead in the game’s first ten minutes. Kaszuba added another goal in the first half and Dayton carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The Flyers didn’t have as many quality chances at the goal as they did in the Fordham game, but UD doesn’t waste their opportunities. Only a shot that hit the far post just before halftime kept LaSalle from being down 3-0 before intermission. The Flyer coaching staff would have liked that one because the first team to score after a 2-0 lead usually decides the game. Down just two goals, LaSalle needed just one to change the complexion of the contest.
What didn’t happen in the first half did happen just two minutes into the second half as Kaszuba settled in the goal mouth and redirected a ball past the Explorer goalkeeper for a 3-0 Flyer lead and the venerable backbreaker. Any chance LaSalle was clinging to vanished immediately and the remainder of the game was just a formality.
A short time later Dayton won a free kick just outside the 18yd line. The Flyers wasted no time and immediately played the ball to Sunday Isename breaking for the near post. The Explorers were caught napping and Isename sent a ball into the box that Kaszuba finished off for the 4-0 advantage.
The Flyers weren’t done however. As the game approached the final ten minutes, junior Lee Crawford took a pass down the line and raced for the corner flag. Crawford sent a perfect ball into the box for an unmarked Isename at the far post who had all day to line up a strong head ball. The LaSalle goalkeeper got a glove on the header but it was struck well enough to beat him anyhow for thfinal score of the day.
Dayton continues to dominate in all phases of the game. Defensively, the Flyers are downright stingy. The trio of Chris Harder, Michael Nsien, and Denny Clanton form the Ministry of Defense that shuts down seemingly positive scoring chances for the opponent in the blink of an eye. LaSalle managed just one strong scoring chance all afternoon — a free-for-all in the penalty box that Dayton finally cleared out. Flyer goalkeeper Matt Hutchins wasn’t tested once and were it not for Flyer fullbacks playing balls to his feet to keep him occupied, he might have had time for a short nap.
Kaszuba’s four goals earn him the UDPride Player of the Game, and, combined with Friday’s tally of three goals, puts him at the top of the A-10 in points and goals. Not only is Kaszuba a strong candidate for A-10 Player of the Week, but his weekend performance could earn him national recognition as well.
