The Dayton Flyers finally have someone else to shoot, rebound, and defend against as a touring Russian team invades the UD Arena on Tuesday night for the Flyers’ first dress rehearsal of the season. Tip off is 7:30pm against Ural Great.

While most preseason games are a bit sloppy and full of minor mistakes, most coaching staffs have already penciled in their starting lineup days in advance. For the Flyers however, no one is sure who will take the court for the opening tip. Super sophomore Tony Stanley, and veterans Coby Turner, Mark Ashman, and Edwin Young appear to be secure, but the fifth and final spot is a serious question mark. Many believe 6’9” 250lb junior Stephen Bamigbola will start at center and Mark Ashman will finally slide to power forward – his natural position. Oliver Purnell may elect to start Ashman at center and insert sophomore Yuanta Holland, an athletic 6’8” forward who has a reputation of being an outstanding rebounder.

Sure to see a lot of action will be freshman David Morris, a 5’10” point guard from Laurel, MD, who will assume the backup point guard duty now that Josh Postorino’s career is over. Morris, a lightning-quick dynamo who plays aggressive defense and passes well, should make UD a better ballclub more than any other player. Others primed to make a contribution are Andy Metzler, Cain Doliboa, Matt Cooper, and Nate Green.

Expect a faster, more athletic Flyer squad this season. Purnell may press after most Dayton baskets and attempt to get easy baskets off transition opportunities.
