BEVERLY HILLS (MI) –- Now, that was a freakin’ basketball game!
UD only won by 13 when the “FTS” prediction was a 15 point differential in the Flyers’ favor…time for a new crystal ball, I guess. Obviously, the only downside to the whole evening was the serious injury to Rob Lowery. Get well soon, RL. However, that misfortune opened the door for “Super Sub” aka Stephen Thomas. CW was no doubt POG, but ST has to be the UD unsung POG/Hero.
Pretty much stayed glued to the tube and left the laptop upstairs in my office. From the relative lack of activity on the UD Pride MB during the actual game it appears that a lot of you guys made the same choice. The only possible explanation I can come up with for the absolutely crapola TV signal was that WHIO produced the telecast for ESPN. Gee, why didn’t ESPN have those kinds of “technical difficulties” for the Duke/UNC game that followed UD’s upset victory?
My brother Bud (UD Class of 1970) called at halftime and was very impressed by what he saw. He follows the Flyers, but not as closely as I do and couldn’t get over the defense being played by BG boys. The Newly Minted Attorney Elder Swampette called after the game. She discovered that the cable system in her new apartment in Chicago had ESPN Classic, so she didn’t have to venture out to Finley Dunne’s to watch the fun.
As I had hoped, Paul Williams got to face Opie Redford mano-a-mano and more than held his own. PW hit a big 3, got a steal and the assist on a MJ circus layup and another dime on a nice entry pass to Devin for a layup. In the post-game lineup, I saw Redford and PW hug it out. Good sportsmanship.
Gotta send out some post-X game greetings and a told-you-so or three to some of my new pals on the X message boards:
— To the Flyer Faithful in attendance at the X game: UD Arena has never looked better or redder nor sounded louder or prouder. Nicely done by all.
— To Mike Decourcey of The Sporting News: you picked the wrong game to cover, dude. Duke/UNC was a snoozefest compared to the UD/X game.
— To Chris Disano of College Chalk Talk: thanks again for picking the Flyers to win, dude. You have good taste.
— To the idiot who registered on the XavierHoops.com MB as “GrandpaSwampyMeadows”: Very funny…really.
— To XavierHoops.com MB posters MADXTER, XU05AND07, Jimmy TwoTimes37 and Lamont Sanford who are actually stupid enuf to think that I would first of all register on an X MB and secondly, choose a name like the above: all I can say is that your Xavier education is really serving you well.
— To Dana O’Neil from ESPN: Smart move to change your prediction after you found out the game was being played at UD Arena. Thanks for the excellent article on CW,too. Don’t be a stranger to the UD program.
— To the guy in the student section with the lime green full-body leotard on: next time, see if they have it in neon red or shocking blue.
— To PM Thor: So, who doesn’t know what he’s talking about now, toolbag?
— To ESPN2: You bumped us for soccer, but gave us a make-good at 11 so I was able to record the game for posterity. Beats a stick in the eye.
— To Jay Williams, Analyst ESPN’s “College Basketball Final”: If you are gonna be the ‘expert’ you need to know what you’re talkin’ about. This was not UD’s 1st “signature” win of the season.
— To XavierTragedy: You sure were clairvoyant when you picked that MB handle! And who the heck are you calling “pear shaped” Ace?
— To supposed UD student 1 and Done: If you actually do go to UD why are you on a Xavier MB attempting to curry favor with our hated rival and saying I’m “not the voice of the typical Flyer fan.” And you are?
— To Paul Daugherty: Thanks for the bulletin board material, cowboy. Yeah, Eggsavior really is too good for this league. Not.
