All I know is Lynn Greer Jr was a freaking nightmare. And once you fouled him, it was an automatic two points. He and Louisville's DeJuan Wheat are two of my all-time semi-under-the-radar PG studmuffins.

Lynn Greer was and probably still is my favorite non Dayton a10 players I've watched over the last 20+ years that UD has been in the A10. If he's anything like his old man, UD is in for a treat.

Lynn Greer was also known as the "Baby Faced Assassin". He was impossible to stop. Chaney would clear out the other four players and let the opponents try to stop him.
Awesome basketball player.

#23 is 6'9" Jalen Duren who is a 5 star Junior (class of 2022) for Montverde Academy this season. With 11 scholarship offers per verbalcommits.com most of the bluebloods are after him but he hasn't committed yet. Among them are Kentucky, Villanova and several Big Ten schools.

Rivals has UD up to the 12th best class in the country. They still have Amzil as part of the 21 class, but still a great class if he was removed.

And that is with Greer listed as a three star. Verbal Commits and ESPN both list him as a four star.

Those are skewed by large classes. A team with 7 recruits of all 3 stars could rank higher than Duke who has 2 recruits (but both are 5 stars). Missouri for example has 5 recruits, all 3*. They rank ahead of Gonzaga who has only 2 recruits but both are 4 star. I think I'd rather have Gonzaga's class of 2 than Missouri's class of 5, all things being equal.
Harvard is tied with Florida for 51st. Harvard has 4 3*'s, while Florida has only a single recruit, a 5*.

Chris,
Is Hal Greer, star of the early 50s an ancestor of Lynn Greer?
Seems to me he was from Philadelphia and had a good NBA career too.

Hal Greer was from Huntington, WV and stayed at hometown Marshall University. He was royalty in Huntington and one of the most major roads in town is named after him.

In case you missed it, DaRon Holmes and Malachi Smith were both named as nominees for the McDonald's All American roster this year. Full nominee list can be seen here. The game itself isn't happening this year because of Covid, but they're still going to announce final rosters and honor them with a "virtual celebration."

For those interested, Flyin to the Hoop has just announced that they are bringing a limited version back on March 7 and 8. On March 8 Compass Prep, with DaRon, will play YPSI Prep. I already picked up 2 tickets.
Interestingly they are permitting 600 fans in Vandalia Butlers gym. How can a HS school gym get 600, but the Arena only 300?

He is a Junior in Division 2, so he would be immediately eligible for his senior season in D1?
I guess he would be looking to get more exposure and future opportunities by moving up a division for his senior year?

How the heck did that kid end up in D2? Looks to have excellent hands and body control, great athleticism, can finish thru contact, saw him go both right and left. good court vision, Fantastic anticipation on blocks. Hit a few threes, never saw him miss a free throw.
I know the highlights are vs D2 teams, but I saw a lot of Obi on there. Better handle, not quite as explosive as Obi. Yeah, he would look good in red & blue

50% free throw shooter, terrible 3 point shooter, strictly an inside game. What is interesting on his free throw shooting is that some games he'll got 10/12 or 7/9 then other games he'll go 1-6 or 3-10. Seems very hot/cold on free throws looking at the game by game stats.

well he's redshirted as a frosh, but this season I assume doesn't count like everyone else, so in theory he would have 2 years, but he's getting up their in age relative to other kids so he may only want to play 1 more year of college basketball.

Article I read said he was 5'8" early in his HS career and as he grew he could jump and he only cared about dunking and hardly ever worked on any other parts of his game. He did not even have a full D2 offer.
When he went to college he grew to 6'8" but only weighed 190 so he even RS his first year at Northern State which, imo, is even more amazing having to RS at a no-name, small school.

Have to trust the staff's assessment of him, but I just don't feel like his game would translate very well to the D1 level. He was simply the best athlete on the floor by a mile which would not be the case against D1 competition. Didn't see a big skill set.

Hard disagree. If you have that much bounce and that much touch around the rim you will be at least passable. That kid would be the best athlete in a lot of D1 games.

He does a lot of things that most D1 athletes can't dream of doing. The body control, fight thru contact, touch around the rim, soft hands, etc... Doesn't automatically make him a star in D1, but there are a lot of D1 basketball players that would like to have that skill set. Doesn't appear to have much range, and didn't see much back to the basket work, everything was face up. He handles the ball better than Obi, but doesn't appear to have anywhere near the range, which is what made Obi so tough, he cold pull defenders out to the arc with him. Most teams would play off that kid. He'll definitely find a role in D1 somewhere, either UD or elsewhere.

Obi took 21 three pointers in 33 games his first year and made 11. His second year he took 82 and made 32. It is a learned skill. Would Fox be Obi, or Landers, or worse? No one knows. Don't write off a great athlete with little offensive skills, as Landers and Kyle Davis had profound effects on our team.
Kid reminds me of Chase, who ended up shooting some threes.

You talking Chase Johnson? If so, still not sure what your point is. CJ played a total of 13 games for UD. That's hardly "two years". And if you want to go further, Obi was 2-3 in 3 point shots his first 13 games. To summize, still not sure what your point is AND alot can happen in development the more games a good player plays.

Interesting article on ESPN+ concerning the potential headache of seniors returning for an additional year. The opinion is such that many more than expected might return or move to another school for their additional extra year. The payoff of foreign leagues has dropped considerably because of Covid.

Interesting. I've felt since this rule was made that far more players will want to return to their school for many obvious reasons but a reduced payoff of foreign leagues was not one I would have envisioned as a reason why a player would return.

You had me at "Defensive Player of the Year". I get that it's in a DII conference, but this team needs some defensive toughness.
The ability to finish at the rim, while it makes for great highlights, would be secondary for me.

Fox had a little bit of an off game in the quarterfinals of his Conference tournament yesterday
13 points 10 rebounds 6 blocks and also had 6 turnovers... he fouled out with 3 min left in the regulation... They did go on to win 87-84 in OT

FWIW, Fox is following members of probably 15 different D1 coaching staffs. Not sure why, but I got the impression from the thread that he was particularly interested in UD. He may be, but more than anything Fox seems interested in moving up a level or two in competition.

Nice article about Compass Prep and DaRon. His coach calls him a future NBA player who already has an “NBA motor”. https://bvmsports.com/2021/02/28/no-...nal-spotlight/

FWIW, According to my 16 year-old son who actually called the Lynn Greer III commitment, there’s been some interesting exchanges on Instagram Live between Lynn and Efton Reid. Bottom line, Greer is recruiting Reid hard to come to Dayton. Who knows? Stay tuned....

DaRon’s AZ Compass team won the Grind Championship last night over BFL Prep who features several P5 commits, including Paolo Banchero. Banchero is considered the #1 or 2 player in the country-6’ 10” and unbelievably strong and quick and is a one and done player going to Duke. DaRon played him straight up most of the game and held him to 7/25 from the field. DaRon is a gifted defender.

This thing called the internet. You can watch these games. Watched DaRons game last night. Also, due the genius of the NYC Mayor, Malachi’s team has yet to play this year.

Thanks for posting. Watched the first two minutes and #5 (Banchero - Duke recruit) is a beast! Can do it all. Flipped through parts of the rest. Holmes looks to be a very good shot blocker. Made 5 work for it. Seems like Holmes plays out on the wings a lot when they run their O but did not see him score or shoot more than two feet from the basket? I Probably missed some of his buckets though.

I watched the game. It was very high level. Every player on the court was a high D1 type player. Banchero is a big time player but as the game wore on you could see DaRon get stronger. He blocked a couple of Banchero’s shots which seemed to affect him. Held him to 7/25 shooting.

DaRon in Dayton tonight to face the # 1 player in the country, Emoni Bates in the Flyin' to the Hoop Top Gun Showcase.
Gonna finally watch some live basketball and I'm pumped! I find myself more excited about basketball than what I have been in a while. It's been a long season for Flyer fans.

I’m ok with a $10 fee to live view a future Flyer- just as long as its not some sort of hidden recurring monthly charge.

I just got home and since the game is probably more than half over could someone just give a quick scouting report on the game and DaRon Holmes specifically!

Big and slow. Has a hard time getting up and down the court. Has terrible form on his shot. Took 2 free throws and missed them badly. His ball spins sideways off his hand ala Kendall Pollard. He needs a lot of coaching.

Bates was a TO machine in the first half and it looked like his coach (Dad) had seen enough of one on 4 basketball. The talent level and coaching difference between these teams was extreme. DaRon is like Obi only a better defender. Either blocks or alters a ton of shots.

It doesn't seem like the year in Michigan has served him well. He was raw, and he joined an all star team that doesn't seem particularly invested in development. Not that it's a particularly big concern, but Phillips has really started to slide down the recruiting rankings.

Might have misunderstood the message, but, boy, it feels like we're getting out over our skis with Holmes. He's going to be dang good in time, but he's not going to walk onto campus as the NPOY.

Rumor is that Bates will skip college and go straight to the G League. He will be making a big mistake if that’s his decision. He’s terribly skinny and is not ready physically for college and certainly not professional basketball. I thought DaRon and Ty Ty Washington were the best players on the floor. TA111 is absolutely correct is his assessment of Phillips. His shooting form is actually worse than Kendall Pollard. He’s a big kid that’s not very skilled and needs a lot of coaching.

I know he is only a junior, but if he doesn’t make a large jump next year the Flyers should pass. We’ve seen this movie before with big slow unskilled kids.

It was very cool to see DaRon wearing a Dayton t-shirt during warmups. Also, talked with Eric Horstman and asked if CAG and staff would be attending the game. Apparently, two weeks ago, the NCAA established another dead period and coaches were not allowed to go to the games. Sounds like more NCAA bull crap and doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Bates is also just a junior, and ESPN ranks him as the #2 prospect in 2021-2022 combined, behind Chet Holmgren, the 7 footer in 2021.

Yeah, I knew he was a junior and was ranked #2 in his class, but I wasn’t very impressed with his game or attitude. He didn’t even play in the second half and finished with 2 points.

He had 5 turnovers in just the first half and took several very bad shots. He’s a long ways from playing in the G league.

The impression that I am getting from all these posts is that the Flyers got the best recruit of the bunch in DaRon Holmes! I hope he is a starter from day 1 because we have some paybacks to give to a lot of A-10 teams next season. All these announcers have been complimenting Osun Osunniyi on his ability to block shots. Wait till they see Holmes!
I hope Mali Smith is a starter from day 1 also. Let Weaver prove his worth at pt. guard if he wants minutes!

At the risk of being the lone contrarian I think he will NOT be ready for ooc starting. But will have shown enough to start in the A10 season. I saw very little that says he is the second coming of Obi. That would be a pretty high bar. He is probably one that has a head start on the competition though.

I didn’t realize Phillips played 21 minutes. It seemed like he was only out there for about 6 minutes.

I have watched what's been posted to UDPride----several times and in slow mo. I see an enthusiastic player with good length. Not impressed with his strength and positioning.
Love to have him on our side. Lots of potential. Can't wait to see him develop. But in D-1 transition there is a learning curve. At his weight he will get pushed around his first year and will foul out while trying to compensate for being thin and going up against opponents who have 2 to 3 years on him. Eventually, I think he will be way better at the 4/5 than all other former players at that position, save Obi.
Just my opinion.

What’s up with Emoni Bates? The supposed #1 player in the class of 2022 basically disappeared vs. the #1 HS team in the country. Bates is rail thin and talking about skipping college and going straight to the pros. Good luck with that, slim.

Seems like a head case. Played the first half but was really bad. Five turnovers and shot 1-6 for 2 points. He was not interested in playing team ball and continued to just go 1 on 5. Coach had seen enough and sat him the second half. Of course the game was essentially over by halftime anyway.

My takeaways being there:
DaRon plays hard with good energy and attitude. I really, really like him. He will become a very good player at UD over time, but I have a hard time imagining him playing in front of RJ, Zimi or Mustapha at the moment. - So I just don't see him stepping onto the court and having a similar Freshmen season like Obi's. - But who am I to say? I hope I am wrong.
Ty Ty Washington - I was really impressed with his game. I thought he was the most polished player on the floor. Wasn't UD in his final school list at one time? The guy is just a very cool, calm player out there. He doesn't force things but is the type of player who makes everyone around him better. I wished we could have landed him. I could see him starting day one at UD.
Emoni Bates - Off that performance, I don't understand the hype at all. Tried to force the action against AZ Compass and appeared to be not in the same class. Also exhibited an attitude which I was not crazy about. Surprised he thinks he is so good that he decommits from Michigan State and is going straight to G League? I just don't see how. I would not even want him at UD.
My thoughts for what they are worth - not much...

Washington had 11 assists against a single turnover??? Wow, very impressive. Creighton landed a good one.

I think Holmes starts day 1. And from a recruiting perspective, I hope he does (hard to sell future top 50 recruits on being a bench player in the A10). But Freshmen are rarely as good as we think they are going to be day 1.
Guard - best ball handler between Weaver/Mali/Greer. Whoever we can trust to not turn the ball over. Freshmen PGs make me nervous, but Jalen had a career high in TO's as a Senior, so who knows. All 3 will get the opportunity to be the starter, I would guess.
Guard - Cohill is the other guard for me. His defense will be needed on the perimeter in the starting lineup. Brea rotates in here, Frazier is an unknown.
Forwards - We won't start a true center, so it's 3 forwards. I'm going RJ, Amzil, and Holmes. Zimi is the first guy off the bench and we rotate those 4 pretty regularly along with Washington. I could see Washington pushing for more and more playing time as the season goes. He will be hard to keep out of the starting lineup by the end of the year.
With his athleticism and defensive abilities, I think Homes can start day 1.
I look at this team, and shooting could be a problem. But we will be plenty long and athletic. Reminds me of a lot of VCU teams over the years.

There's a lot of names coming into the transfer portal. Gonna be a lot of options there if the staff goes down that road

That’s interesting. Jeff Goodman had a podcast around a week ago and said he spoke with an assistant at a P5 school who stated they weren’t even looking at HS kids and were concentrating only on the transfer portal.
